Owner's Description

Along with the rest of the series C issues for 1972 the 1000 cordobas banknote featured a whole new layout and design from the earlier 1962 series A 1000 Cordobas note. They did use the same colour brown as with the previous issues but they added a splash of more colours for this release. This is the 4th and final banknote that features the former dictator president Anastasio Somoza on the obverse. I believe these banknotes were not initially planned for release as part of the series C as the decree authorising the issuance was made well over a year later in late 1973.

These banknotes had a very high face value for the time and were roughly worth $142 USD with the exchange rate pegged at 7:1 during this period. There are two variations that exist the normal pick 128a with three signatures (this one) and the rarer note without the third signature (P128b as seen in the first set). There was a total of 450,000 banknotes printed authorised in two decrees.

These notes feature a brown background with the effigy of former Nicaraguan president Anastasio Somoza on the obverse who had now been featured on the 1000 Cordobas notes since their inception in 1953, and the subsequent releases in 1954 & 1962 and a view over the city of Managua on the reverse.

These banknotes of Un Mil (1000) Córdobas were issued initially under a separate decree from the rest of the Series C banknotes, and the subsequent decree that was together with the rest of the Series that authorised more banknotes to be printed .
The first the Executive Decree 56-MEIC approved on the 12th of November 1973 authorised the issuance of a new 1000 Cordobas Series C banknotes with 150,000 banknotes authorised with a total face value of C$150,000,000

The serial numbers commence with 000001 until completion (150000).

There was a second Executive Decree 76-MEIC approved on the 13th of March 1974 that authorised a further issuance of another 300,000 Un Mil Córdobas banknotes with a total face value of C$300,000,000

These banknotes will continue from the original first issuance of serial numbers from 150001 - through to completion (450000). Given the high face value and the fact that a new issue was released about 5 years later a there was a portion of these banknotes that did not end up in circulation and the central bank still has these left over banknotes for sale.
