Owner's Description
The new Cordoba Oro dated 1990 and introduced into circulation in 1991, was made up of banknotes from different printers. The 1/2, 5, 20 & 50 Cordobas Banknotes were all produced by the Canadian Banknote Company.
This marks the return of the 5 Cordoba note to Nicaragua with the previous notes being issued in 1972. There are two signature variations and also there is a slight variation in the face of Diriangen that has slightly updated facial expressions and a notable difference in the smile. I believe that these notes started with a serial number A05000001 and onwards (I have a serial number in my collection that would be considered quite low). The initial order was for 7 million banknotes, and I believe there was a total of about 17 million notes produced over the two varieties.
The obverse of this 5 Cordobas note shows Diriangen the indigenous tribal warrior who hailed from the now Diriamba region in Nicaragua that led a tribal rebellion against the Spanish conquerors in 1523.
The reverse of the banknotes feature Rafaela Herrera a Nicaraguan heroine that helped defend the fortress of the Immaculate Conception during the battle for the Rio San Juan in 1762.
