Owner's Description

These 2006 Series B notes feature the same design from the previous 2002 Series A notes series.

This particular note has received the prestigious PMG Star designation also the previous 2001 & 2002 50 Cordobas from this set have also received the same honours.

I don't have exact figures but I believe there was approximately 12/15 million of these notes produced based on the serial numbers I have seen for this issue.

Just like almost all the previous 50 Cordoba banknotes dating back to 1929 and continued through to the current releases purple is the dominant colour. The only note that wasn't purple was the 1985 (1988) issue which was featured red tones. Pedro Joaquin Chamorro's portrait is featured on the obverse of the banknote. Chamorro is featured on the 50 Cordobas banknote following on from the 1990, 1995 & 2001 issues.

Pedro Joaquin Chamorro was the editor of La Prensa (The Press) Newspaper in Nicaragua he was an outspoken critic of the Somoza dictatorship and was gunned down by unknown gunmen in his car in January 1978. Following his assassination there was riots and strikes throughout the capital of Managua and around the country. His widow Violeta Barrios de Chamorro later became president of Nicaragua in 1990.

The reverse of the banknotes feature the Fortress of the Immaculate Conception (Castillo Inmaculada Concepcion). This fortress is a World Heritage listed site that was originally constructed in 1675 along the banks of the San Juan River in El Castillo in Southern Nicaragua. The purpose of this fort was to protect the city of Granada from Pirate attacks. A scene depicting the Fortress is also present on the reverse of the 1000 Cordobas banknotes from 2016/19.
