Owner's Description

The all new Banco Central de Nicaragua (Central Bank) issued its first notes for this emission as Serie A in 1962. This was approved through executive decree # 71 on the 26th of April 1962. For a total of 16,915,000 banknotes from 1 - 500 Cordobas but didn't include the 100 Cordoba banknotes. These were added later in 1963.

The original decree was for only 15,000 500 Cordoba banknotes. With the second executive decree #68 on the 4th of April 1963 increasing this amount to 90,000.

These notes feature a black background with the effigy of legendary Nicaraguan poet Ruben Dario on the obverse who was featured on the 500 Cordobas notes from 1945, and the subsequent releases in 1953, 1954, 1962 (this year), 1972 and changed colour in 1979 and 1985.

The rear of the note shows Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba, the Nicaraguan currency's namesake. He was a Spanish explorer and the founder of the cities of Leon and Granada in Nicaragua.
