An evenly circulated note from this sought after Putnam County bank that was robbed by the John Dillinger gang on October 23, 1933 of $74,782.09. Kenneth West, Cashier, said only a small part of the bonds would be negotiable and that the loss was covered by insurance. John Dillinger spent time in Michigan City State Prison from 1929 until he was paroled in 1933. A few months after Dillinger made parole, on September 26, ten inmates, including Harry Pierpont, Charles Makley, Russell Clark, and Ed Shouse, escaped thanks to the help of three pistols Dillinger had smuggled into the prison.
