Owner's Description

These newly designed 20 Cordobas notes for Series B for 1995 carried forward a similar images from the previous 1990 notes however they are trying to bring the series design more inline with that of the 1, 10 & 100 Cordobas notes.

There was 4.5 million notes produced for this emission as listed in the decree from the Flores book. This note is 4.4 million so its one of the last ones produced.

The obverse has the effigy of revolutionary leader Augusto César Sandino, the rebellious guerrilla leader that fought against the United States involvement and military presence in Nicaragua. He was later executed at the hands of the national guard under orders of General Anastasio Somoza who would later become president and dictator of Nicaragua. He was also featured on the 1000 Cordobas notes issued throughout the 1980s.

The Sandinistas later adpoted his name for their political party and his famous wide brimmed hat and portrait are widely used in their political propaganda and was also featured on the reverse of the coins issued during the 1980s whilst the Sandinistas were in power.

On the right hand side is a coffee plant with the ripe red coffee berries. Coffee plantations are generally in the higher altitude regions throughout the North of the country.

On the reverse of the note is another Nicaraguan that is considered a National Hero he is Emmanuel Mongalo a teacher that volunteered to fight against the filibusters of William Walker, the scene depicts him using a molotov cocktail to a building where the filibusters were held up on the 29th of June 1855. The teachers day is celebrated in Nicaragua on the 29th of June in his honour. 2006 series B notes were carried over from the previous 2002 series A note designs.

I don't have exact figures but I believe there was up to 30 million of these notes produced based on the serial numbers I have seen for this issue.

The obverse of the note has the effigy of the legendary Nicaraguan poet Ruben Dario. It continues the tradition and will be the last 100 Cordoba banknote he is featured on, having previously featured on multiple issues from 1945 through to 1985 on the 500 Cordobas banknotes. He was also on the releases of the 100 Cordoba banknotes from 1990 through to 2006, and also features on the 1000 Cordoba Commemorative issue in 2016.

The reverse of the banknote features the Ruben Dario National Theatre as previously featured on the 1972 500 Cordobas banknotes.
