Owner's Description

One of the most beautiful banknotes worldwide: Lebanon's 1945 pick 53 100 livres "The Carpet Note". A masterpiece by Fel, Broutin, and Armanelli - three of the great artists who produced lots of fantastic notes for Banque de France. Front showing an ornate design mixing camels, flowers, birds, and jewels. Lebanese cedar and snowy mountains on the back. A beautiful bullhead as watermark. Printed in 1945, this note was put in circulation in late 1947. In early 1952, authorities discovered highly sophisticated fake Carpet notes circulating in Lebanon. Thus, the Carpet note was collected from the public and canceled. One theory is that Israeli gangs were behind this forgery. It is noteworthy that one Lebanon Carpet note (100 Livres) was equivalent to US $572 in 1950. The fake notes are also sought after by the collectors and auction houses like Spink and Noonan have sold a couple in the last few years.
