Berlin, NH The Berlin NB Ch. # (N)4523 PMG 20 $5 1902 DB Fr. 593 SN 16/Y995131 pp C Feb. 1, 1911 This challenging New Hampshire note is from the town of Berlin in beautiful Coos County. Three national banks operated within the town's borders during the National Bank Note era. This serial number (SN) 16 note is one of only 19 known large-size bills and bears the lowest known SN among them.
Found along the Androscoggin River in Coös County in northern New Hampshire, Berlin is the northernmost city in the state. It includes the village of Cascade in the south part of the city. Located in New Hampshire's Great North Woods Region or "North Country", Berlin sits at the edge of the White Mountains. Because Quebec is less than 60 miles away, Berlin has many people of French Canadian descent in its population. Around 65% of its residents speak a variant of New England French, which is locally known as "Berlin French".
