Fr. 768 $2 1918 FRBN St. Louis Teehee | Burke | Attebery | Wells PMG 15 SN H558907A pp C3/31. Track & Price reports 80 examples of this $2 St. Louis FRBN issue with the Teehee-Burke and Atterbury-Wells signature combination. From The Mike Coltrane Collection. These are difficult to find, and Mike acquired this example in 2011. PMG assigned a slightly conservative grade. Very clean surfaces on both sides for the amount of circulation. A great Friedberg number in the "Battleship" lineup.

Danville, PA The First NB Ch. # 325 PMG 30 $5 Original Fr. 394a Radar SN 212/461676 RED pp C PMG 1991115-004 dtd. April 2d. 1864. This note features the FEB 25th, 1863 Act approved date, bottom center as well as the 1863 Variety 1 Counterfeit statement with two dots beneath 25th. on the back. It has a Variety 2 face (feathers in Indian princess's headress; hooked shaped top branch by 5 protector) and Variety A back with Columbus wearing black pantaloons with definitive vertical white stripes. Back lower right just beaneath vignette there are only 3 florishes--missing 4th small florish. The bank issued notes from Original Series to 1929 small size. However, the earliest notes are very rare, and this $5 Original Series is the only one from the bank reported in Track & Price. Although the margins are traditionally close for the type in some spots, this is still a very vivid, well printed, and colorful note with modest circulation. Excellent penned signatures of W.(William) A.M. Grier, Cashier and Sam'l Yorks, Jr., President. Mike purchased it privately at the 2017 IPMS show. From The Mike Coltrane Collection.

New York, NY The Western NB Ch. # 3700 PMG 12 $5 1882 BB Fr. 469 Radar SN 21312/X823755 pp H dtd. May 9, 1887. Extremely bold and dark penned signatures of H.A. Smith (Smith's signature, if it is indeed his, consists of a whirl of penmanship that gratefully survives to date), Cashier and Jno. E. Searles, President (who served in this position from only 1896-1898 and possessed a beautifully legible signature). This bank issued Brown Backs only during its 16 year run. Liquidated 31 Jan. 1903. Kelly lists just 13 survivors. One of the three institutions chartered in New York City to adopt a geographical title such as "western." All speedily failed, leaving the one obvious choice, "Eastern," unused. Note the color of the seal which is a Pink Seal and Charter Number attributed to variations in the ink colors used by the BEP, resulting in a pinkish-brown color. On $5 BBs pink seals have been found for Treasury SNs from the X, Y and Z blocks or from around mid 1896 to early 1898.
Treasury Secretary Manning, Treasurer Jordan and BEP Chief Graves were reformers who rode in on the coattails of President Grover Cleveland in 1885. Manning and Jordan organized The Western National Bank of the City of New York, charter 3700, on February 9, 1887, before both had officially left their Federal offices. The bank was chartered May 9th with Manning as president, but he was not in good health. Former Secretary of the Treasury Daniel Manning died December 24, 1887. His portrait was used on the $20 Series of 1886 and 1891 silver certificates.
