This $5 has a great bank title loaded with local history and originally chartered on June 19, 1875 entering receivership on Nov. 15, 1932. Stamped signatures in dark, black are D.S. Kerr, Cashier and W.S. Linderman, President.

Pittsburgh, PA The Diamond NB Ch. # (E)2236 PMG 20 $10 1902 PB Fr. 631 Radar SN 13831/Z310293D pp B/606 dtd. Mar. 22, 1915. Excellent, bold, black stamped signatures of W.O. Phillips, Cashier and William Price, President from this popularly named Allegheny County bank that went under on November 14, 1932.
Along with Circleville, OH; Diagonal, IA; and Oblong, IL, the Diamond NB joins a short list of banks with names that involve shapes.

Pittsburgh, PA The Metropolitan NB Ch. # (E)2279 PMG 20 $20 1902 DB Fr. 649a Teehee | Burke SN 2843/N601391B pp A/270 dtd. June 2, 1915. From the Mike Coltrane Collection. Mike amazingly owned two Fr. 649a rarities, the Minneapolis (710) in PMG 25 sold for $2160 with an estimate of $2-3k. The Metropolitan NB issued large only and for a brief period series of 1902 DBs and PBs, 10s and 20s only, until liquidated 7/25/1924. Only 4000 sheets of 3x$10-$20 DBs made in 1915. There are four known for Fr 649a, and this example has a desirable Tom Flynn pedigree. The note saw circulation, but is in a comment-free holder. Purple stamped signatures of H.(Harry) B. Stewart, Cashier and W.J. Zahniser, President. Ex: Lyn Knight, December 2009, lot 1059; Heritage's 2008 CSNS sale, lot 13361 from the Thomas M. Flynn sale.

Tarentum, PA The Peoples NB Ch. # 5351 PMG 25 $20 1902 PB Fr. 659 SN 7255 pp B/1203 dtd. Apr. 4, 1920. A very scarce Allegheny County bank with only nine large size reported that are split between two titles: The NB of Tarentum being 1st. Purple stamped signatures of John P. Crawford and W.A. Marvin. Tarentum, PA is on the Allegheny R. NE of Pittsburgh. The Pennsylvania Salt Manufacturing Co. is just upstream. This town was named for the Greek colony of Tarentum in southern Italy that was founded in 706 B.C. by a group of Spartans.
