This 1st series 5-cent note is nicely center on the front with the back just slightly high. There are a couple of pulled perfs on the left side and the right side the perfs are a bit uneven, probably limiting the grade. The bottom of the note still has a thin selvage attached.

Owner Comments
The first issue 5-cent note was initially issued without perforations and cut from the sheet with scissors. To make issuing the notes faster, they started to perforate the sheets, however this complicated the counting of the sheets as they tended to snag and fall apart too easy, so they went back to cutting the notes from the sheet. Perforated notes tend to be easily damaged due to the perfs sticking out. This gem Uncirculated no monogram note features good centering and color. These are scarce and hard to find with good centering. The perfs are good with a few that are a bit short. A very nice overall note with only one note graded better.

These notes were printed by two different companies for the U.S. The front of these notes were printed by the National Bank Note Co. of New York. The backs were printed by the American Bank Note Company and you can see their stylized logo on the lower right corner. This gem note is printed on a tan colored paper and is well centered.

Owner Comments
- A tight bottom margin and a curved right edge limits the grade on this note. The reverse is well centered and would have been perfect if the bottom was cut correctly but the cut is still clear of the printing. Cutting with scissors as these notes were, has its drawbacks.

- The bottom and left side were perforated well clear of the guide lines, which can still be seen. The top and right side are right at the edge of the printing, limiting the grade of this note. The perforations are just clear of the printing on the reverse. Strong color to the ink, deserving of the EPQ grade.

- I am sure this note would have graded a 65 or higher if the reverse printing was perfectly centered. This is really a pretty note.
