B341 Somerset £1
BANKNOTE DATA
* First run prefix AN01
* Series D “Pictorial” banknote
* Sir Isaac Newton reverse
* Issued on March 20, 1981
* Withdrawn from circulation on March 11, 1988
NOTABLE ABOUT THIS NOTE
This note is similar to the preceding Series D £1 notes (B337/B339/B340), except that this issue features additional colors, including lilac, pink, and yellow.
While the Pick catalogue doesn’t classify this note as the first in a new type, the Banknote Book does because of the watermark and color modifications.
The Series D £1 note was the last £1 note issued by the Bank of England, as this denomination was gradually replaced by the £1 coin beginning in 1983.
A distinctive feature of this issue was that the serial number was printed on it only once.

This note features the signature of David H.F. Somerset.
Somerset was the 26th Chief Cashier of the Bank of England, serving from March 1, 1980 to February 28, 1988.
MEANWHILE, ON THREADNEEDLE STREET...
Gordon Richardson was Governor of the Bank of England when this note was issued. He was the Bank’s 116th Governor, serving from July 1, 1973 to June 30, 1983.

ON A PERSONAL NOTE...
As a collector of English coins, I especially appreciate the vignette of St. George and the dragon on the front of this banknote, as it very closely resembles the design on the reverse of the Sovereign.
