Series 1935D $1 Wide Silver Certificate
BANKNOTE DATA
* This note is from the R/E Block – the first block for Series 1935D $1 Silver Certificates
* Notes of this block were printed from June to July 1949
* Never withdrawn from circulation and still legal tender, Silver Certificates have not been redeemable for silver since June 24, 1968
NOTABLE ABOUT THIS NOTE
This note is the “Wide” variety of the Series 1935D $1 Silver Certificates. The difference between a "Wide" and "Narrow" Series 1935D $1 Silver Certificate refers to a subtle change in the height of the engraved design on the back of the note. While the physical paper size remained the same, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing transitioned to a slightly smaller printed back design in 1952, effectively increasing the size of the margins on the back of the note. On a "Wide" variety, the printed design is larger and the margins are smaller, and there is a noticeably larger gap of green space above "THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and below "ONE DOLLAR". In the "Narrow" variety, the printed design is smaller and the margins are larger, causing this gap to be reduced, and making the design sit closer to the edge of the printed area. The "Wide" design is approximately 3mm (or 1/16th inch) taller than the "Narrow" design.
As Treasurer of the United States, Georgia Neese Clark’s signature appears on the notes of this series. A former actress and bank president, Clark was the first woman to serve as Treasurer.

Georgia Neese Clark was the 29th Treasurer of the United States, serving from June 21, 1949 to January 27, 1953. She was appointed by President Harry S. Truman and continued into the administration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
