Owner's Description

The note selected for the Banco Internacional is a readily available 1 sucre remainder, S172r. The Coat of Arms for Ecuador is on the front right whereas on the left is a portrait of Antonio Jose de Sucre. Sucre was a Venezuelan General who played a key role in gaining independence of numerous territories from the Spanish following the Napoleonic Wars, starting with victory in 1822 at the Battle of Pinchincha, which liberated Quito which went on to become the capital of Ecuador. He also served as President of Bolivia from 1825 until 1828, was a close friend of Simon Bolivar, yet was assassinated on 4th June 1830 by anti-Bolivar forces. The currency, the sucre, was named after him and replaced the peso in 1884 with this being one of the first issues for the bank in the new currency.
