Owner's Description

This note was issued on February 8th, 1813 in the amount of $20 and was cashed by David Hogg (I found the history of David Hogg which really makes this a cool find. Read Here)
Birth: 1781
Pennsylvania, USA
Death: Aug., 1854
Cartwright (Smith County)Smith County
Tennessee, USA
The following information is taken from the book Descendants of Michael Hogg by Marguerite A. Tibbetts revised 2002. David was born 1781 in Pennsylvania according to the 1850 census. He moved to Smith County, Tennessee as early as 1818 according to land records and appears on the 1820 Smith County census. His land lay north and east of the Cam Fork river. This area was north and slightly east of Carthage, Tennessee. There is an area there called Hoggtown and a creek called Hoggtown branch. A cemetery is there called the Hogg Cemetery, but only a few markers remain. This cemetery lies on a hill above the lake formed by the Cordell Hull dam on the Cumberland River. David, his brother Harvey, and later his son Leonidas David were evidently merchants in Carthage. David was also the postmaster at Mulberry Grove (which no longer exists) in 1824. David married Nancy (Gillespie?) b. 1787 in Virginia, sometime around 1808. David's will was dated 1 January 1849 and was admitted to probate in the 1854 August/September and December terms.
David and Nancy (Gillespie?) Hogg had eight children Richard, Leonidas, Shelby, Ellen, Lousia, Caroline and Mary. Richard Lawson White born around 1809 probably in Harrison County, Kentucky. Died 28 November 1844 and his children are listed as heirs in his father David Hogg's will. Leonidas David was born 18 April 1811 in Kentucky. Leonidas died 11 August 1875 and is buried in the Hogg Cemetery above the Cordell Hull lake near Hoggtown. Shelby Isaac was born between 1814. Shelby died 15 September 1849 and his father, David, was named as his executor. Son Shelby Jr. born. ca. 1840 was named in his father David Hogg's will.Ellen M. born 1818 in Smith County, Tennessee. She never married. Died prior to 24 December 1860 when her will was probated in Smith County, Tennessee. Louisa Rebecca born 24 April 1821 at Walnut Grove, Smith County, Tennessee. She married Dr. John S. Cornwall on 25 July 1837. Louisa died 15 November 1890 and is buried with her husband in the old city or Methodist Church Cemetery in Carthage, Tennessee. Caroline R. Married ca. 4 March 1842 Dr. N.B.Pillow. She died in 1849. No children. Amelia Jane born ca. 1826 in Smith County, Tennessee. She married 1848 Buckner Strum Cardwell. Mary A. born ca. 1828. Mary married Leonidas Edwards on 14 February 1848. One daughter Cora born 1849. Taken from LDS microfilm #319179 for Wills, Smith County, Tennessee. David's will is dated January 1, 1849 in Smith County, Tennessee. Codicil 24 Nov 1853. Wife Nancy. Sons R.L.W., deed., L. D., Shelby, dec'd. Daughters Ellen M. Hogg, Louisa R.
