Set Theme:
The county seat of Warren County and a first name town, but actually named after General Warren. Major General (Dr.) Joseph Warren, b. June 11 1741, was an American physician and President of the revolutionary Massachusetts Provincial Congress. Dr. Warren's death when British troops attacked the redoubt atop Breed's Hill was immortalized in John Trumbull's painting, The Death of General Warren at the Battle of Bunker's Hill, June 17, 1775. He has been memorialized in the naming of many towns, counties and other locations in the United States, by statues, and in numerous other ways. When the Warren NB extended its charter for another 20 years in 1913, its notes received the coveted Napier-Thompson signature combination, but only issued $5s and $10s, albeit 10,500 sheets of 1902 date backs and then many more plain backs (10,501-111,261 for $5s and 10,501-87,613 for $10s). Only 132 charter numbers received notes from Napier-Thompson plates. For the 1902 date backs the Cashier was E.H Lamper and early 1902 Plain Back issues, the Cashier was N.C. Gill and the President was F.E. Hertzel. This changed to R.W. Mackay and F.E. Hertzel around the time that the regional letters were removed starting March 15, 1924. MacKay and Hertzel continued to manage the Warren NB through the 1929 Type 1 period. MacKay served more than one president with Miner D. Coary and E.W Johnson appearing as president on Type 2 notes (that's my best guess at interpreting Coary's signature). Look for a postcard of the Warren NB from approximately 1916 with one of my $5 PBs. Also, I've added my $10 1882 DB from The Citizens NB Ch. # (E)2226 along with a nice $20 PB and a $5 red seal from the First NB of Warren.
