Zimbabwe Banknotes and Emergency Checks. The goal of the set was to assemble a collection of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th dollar issues (and other notes as I feel appropriate) that will collectively tell the entire story of Zimbabwean currency from its creation in 1980 to its death in 2015, in a single registry set. The concept for the set later expanded to include the aftermath and attempts to create a new national currency for Zimbabwe.

There is a quote from “The Sun Also Rises,” by Ernest Hemingway, wherein, when Mike Campbell is asked, "How did you go bankrupt?" He replies, "Two ways. Gradually, then suddenly." I think when you look at the full history of the Zimbabwe dollars from 1980 to 2009, that perfectly describes how the currency died and how the country went bankrupt.

Set Description:
Ever since I first learned about the concept of "hyper-inflation," about 10 years ago, I've been fascinated by these economic events and I first encountered the concept when reading articles about Zimbabwe. Hyperinflations have been rather more common throughout history than I think anyone that has experienced, or even read about it, would like.

When you want to "see" hyperinflation, you must look at currency. Coinage goes out of circulation quickly during hyperinflations - the country isn't going through the expense of making coins as the denominations and designs keep changing.

Some people dismiss hyperinflation notes as "just big numbers." Admittedly, hyperinflationary notes tend to not be the prettiest or most artistic notes. This is a natural outgrowth of the circumstances in which the notes were produced. The economic crisis created by the inflation and the need to produce more bills and in progressively higher denominations rapidly means that there usually isn't as much effort expended in making the notes pretty - it is far more important that they be produced and issued quickly and cheaply. The Zimbabwe notes aren't an exception to this.

The hyperinflation that occurred in Zimbabwe, and the associated global spectacle that came with it as the world watched, created a great opportunity to build sets of well-preserved hyperinflation notes. This was made easier by the fact that people were camping out at airports in Zimbabwe and selling the newest, biggest denomination notes to tourists leaving the country as souvenirs and novelty items - they were able to get American money for these notes that were quickly losing their value and they were probably getting a lot more than the notes were worth at that point by selling them as novelties. They could then hold on to the very prized (usually) American cash and use that to exchange for goods and services within their own country. They could have some confidence that the American money would still be able to buy something later if they didn't spend it immediately. These novelty notes were brought home to the United States in vast numbers and traded / sold around to the curious and the collectors. The fact that the Zimbabwe hyperinflation was how I began to learn about this economic phenomenon made building this set of hyperinflation notes more significant for me.

I think the ability to build the sets of these notes is where you find the real potential with this series, not with the individual notes. Just buying the 100 Trillion note and calling it there doesn't tell the story. This is the story of the frog boiling in the water as it slowly heats up. This story is about acceleration. This is a story that starts very slowly, barely noticeably sometimes, and then accelerates in a vicious feedback loop. To tell that story you need more than one note with a big number on it.

With every redenomination (and most currency changes) the currency code for the Zimbabwean dollar changed:
1st dollar: ZWD (1980-2006)
2nd dollar: ZWN (2006-2008)
3rd dollar: ZWR (2008-2009)
4th dollar: ZWL(2009)
RTGS dollar: ZWL (2019)
New Zimbabwe Dollar: ZWD (2019-Date)

First redenomination: 3 zeros removed
Second redenomination: 10 zeros removed
Third redenomination: 12 zeros removed

The name of this set was originally intended as a reference to the Hemmingway quote that I include in the Set Theme. However, it's also in some ways referential to how the set itself has been built. I started working on this set years ago and was in no particular hurry with it from 2015-2018. It was never abandoned but it wasn't a priority. In 2019 my wife bought me a Zimbabwe note for our anniversary and a short time later a major dealer I purchase through frequently cut their prices. At that point I latched onto an opportunity to grow this set quickly, grabbing notes at low prices while I could. The set became a way for me to relieve some stress surrounding the birth of my second son, which became a high-risk pregnancy followed by a very premature birth in Feb 2019, at 29 weeks gestation. I've decided that, should I still own it at the time of my death, I want that son, Samuel, to get this set.
