Set Description:

During 1949 the US Treasury yielded to the pressures that private printing banknote companies were excersing upon them to discontinue Government supplied printing of Cuban notes and to allow the private segment to compete for this work. Their argument was Cuba no longer needed the US Government assistance, as it did back in 1934, and that when the time came to engrave new plates to issue new notes, the US BEP should not be involved in this endeavour. The Cuban Government thus requested offers from three private printing houses, each prepared and submitted Essays and/or Printer's Specimens of the UN PESO note; American Banknote Company (ABNC) and Security Banknote Company (SBNC) from the USA, and Thomas DeLa Rue (TDLR) from England.
The winner was ABNC, who probably had the "inside track" since they had been printing Cuban Silver Certificates since 1944 along with the US BEP. While ABNC continued printing notes for Cuba until 1960, TDLR was able to gain a foothold contract in 1956 and also continued printing notes for Cuba until 1960.

THIS ONE YEAR ONLY DENOMINATION WAS PRINTED IN 1950. THERE WERE TEN THOUSAND NOTES MADE BY THE AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY. THE ENTIRE ISSUE WAS INCINERATED UNDER THE ADVISE OF DR. JOAQUIN MARTINEZ SAENZ, ALLEGEDLY BECAUSE CUBA DID NOT HAVE THE NEED FOR THIS HIGH DENOMINATION. THEREFORE THESE NOTES WERE NEVER PLACED IN CIRCULATION, AND THE ENTIRE ISSUE WAS DESTROYED SHORTLY AFTER IT ARRIVED IN CUBA. THERE WERE TWO UNCIRCULATED NOTES UNACCOUNTED FOR AT THAT TIME. WE ARE PRIVILEDGED TO HAVE IN OUR CABINET A COMPLETE SET OF IGNACIO AGRAMONTE PROGRESS PROOF VIGNETTES No. 1 THRU No. 5 FROM THE PERSONAL COLLECTION OF THE ABNC ENGRAVER, JOHN HAY, HAND SIGNED IN REVERSE "YAH NHOJ" AND A FINAL UNNUMBERED PROOF VIGNETTE. THERE IS ALSO AN OBVERSE PROGRESS PROOF IN BLACK AND WHITE, PLUS FINAL PROOF UNIFACIALS FOR THE OBVERSE AND REVERSE IN BLACK AND WHITE. FINALLY, THERE IS ALSO AN SPECIMEN NOTE.
