An attractive and problem-free Red Seal from this Philadelphia bank, with excellent colors and sharp pen signatures of R.J. Clark, Cashier and R.H. Rushton, President. Beaver, PA Fort McIntosh NB Ch. # (E)8185 PMG 25 $10 1902 DB Fr. 617 SN 2418/H47804B pp A/267 dtd. Mar. 8, 1906 Robust inks, bright paper surfaces and a beautiful stamped signature of Robert F. Patterson, Cashier, and a completely missing signature for the President add to the appeal of this nicely centered note. President at the time was J. Sharp Wilson. Third Charters only during the large size era, with this being the finer of the two DBs known. Located on the confluence of the Beaver and Ohio Rivers in the Ohio Country in dispute during the French and Indian War, Beaver was the site of Fort McIntosh, a Revolutionary War era Patriot frontier fort. After the war, the fort was the home of the First American Regiment, the oldest active unit in the US Army. The fort was abandoned in 1788 and razed a short time later. Beaver was laid out in 1792. In 1800, it became the county seat of the newly formed Beaver County. Beaver County was carved out of Washington and Allegheny Counties in 1800, taking its name from the Beaver River. Not to be confused with Gov. James A. Beaver (Gov. of PA 1887-1891), born Oct 27, 1837 in Millerstown, PA.

Shelton, Cashier and N. (Neal) B. Marshall, President, remain substantially visible and their jumbo size adds to the note's unquestionable appeal. Carl L. Crooks assumed the role of cashier in 1918 whereupon one must assume Marshall kept Crooks under control. Unionville rests near the exact center of Putnam county, which is found far to the northern border of Missouri where you would expect to find a Unionville.

Mike amazingly owned two Fr. 649a rarities, the Minneapolis (710) in PMG 25 sold for $2160 with an estimate of $2-3k. The Metropolitan NB issued large only and for a brief period series of 1902 DBs and PBs, 10s and 20s only, until liquidated 7/25/1924. Only 4000 sheets of 3x$10-$20 DBs made in 1915. There are four known for Fr 649a, and this example has a desirable Tom Flynn pedigree. The note saw circulation, but is in a comment-free holder. Purple stamped signatures of H.(Harry) B. Stewart, Cashier and W.J. Zahniser, President. Ex: Lyn Knight, December 2009, lot 1059; Heritage's 2008 CSNS sale, lot 13361 from the Thomas M. Flynn sale.
