Signature Set Detail: Citizens National Banks

Set Category:

Set Theme:
This signature set captures my collection of national bank notes with Citizen in their title. Question: are there any towns named Citizen that chartered a national bank? Waynesboro is the only one posted so far that didn't feel the need to put a "the" in front of Citizens... Stay tuned as I work on adding notes and then pictures.

Set Description:
I find banks with Citizen in their title tend to have lower census values than the typical First NBs that chartered earlier in town. I considered adding notes with Peoples in their titles to this set, but just made Peoples its own signature set.

Keene, NH The Citizens NB Ch. # 2299 Blocky Script Keene, NH The Citizens NB Ch. # 2299 Blocky Script Plate Dates and Postal Locations (only on earliest BEP Plates--8 other charters for 3x10-20); White paper with two continuous horizontal threads PMG 20 minor repairs $10 1875 Fr. 416 SN 2689/K296098 pp A Sept. 25th, 1875. Cashier H. (Herbert) B. Viall and President O. (Obed) G. Dort. The Citizens National Bank of Keene was incorporated on September 18, 1875, and began business on October 1 of the same year opening to the public on November 1. The capital was $100,000. Stephen D. Osborne was the founding president, and Obed G. Dort was the first cashier. In some listings the bank title was in the possessive, as Citizens', but most omitted the apostrophe. The bank did well, and in various audits all was found to be financially sound. On August 11, 1924, A.M. Avery, acting chief of the Organization Division of the Treasury Department, sent this memo to the chief of the Examining Division: "The Ashuelot National Bank of Keene (946) and the Citizens National Bank of Keene (2299), Keene, New Hampshire, contemplate consolidating under the act of November 7, 1918, under the charter of the Ashuelot National Bank of Keene, and under the title of the Ashuelot-Citizens National Bank of Keene. Please advise if there are any assets of either association which should not be taken into the consolidated bank." On September 6, 1924, the aforementioned consolidation took place, the Ashuelot-Citizens National Bank became the title, and the Citizens National Bank of Keene was no more. 2508047-011 $10 1875 National Bank NotesUnited StatesVF 20

The Citizens is a scarce bank--this is only the second $10 Value Back to be reported. Evenly circulated and problem free with nice color and margins. Ten Dollars and National Bank are reminiscent of Walcutt's Gp 16 plate note of Towanda, PA (also the Citizens NB). The A in Dollars has the diagonal crossbar and the E in Ten matches the E in Five. Letters for NB have spikes on top and bottom surfaces, but for Lewistown it is layed out in a curve, not flat, with larger letters, but the dangling balls off the T are gone. Signatures have faded away. 5004559-020 $10 1882 Value Back National Bank NotesUnited StatesVF 25

Havre de Grace, MD The Citizens NB Ch. # 5445 Havre de Grace, MD The Citizens NB Ch. # 5445 PMG 12 $20 1902 PB Fr. 659 SN 4766 pp A/850 dtd. June 16, 1920. Great name on a tough Harford County note. Faded signatures of W.A. Leffler, Cashier and Joseph Condon, President remain visible. Havre de Grace is at the mouth of the Susquehanna River where it empties into the Chesapeake Bay.

During the Revolutionary War, the small hamlet known as Harmer's Town was visited several times by General Lafayette, considered a hero of the war. He commented that the area reminded him of the French seaport of Le Havre, which had originally been named Le Havre-de-GrĂ¢ce. Inspired by Lafayette's comments, the residents incorporated the town as Havre de Grace in 1785.
