The "Circus Poster" layout is the most eye catching and collectible design in the $5 Brown Back series of 1882. In almost all cases, by the time $5 Date Backs were first issued in 1908, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing had retired the plates with the fancy "circus poster" layouts and were supplying the banks with notes carrying a more generic title layout. Another layout is the cigar box label design, also eye-catching and very tough to find on Date Backs. There are many other differences in designs a bit more subtle that do not receive a separate Fr #, nor a 10X boost in price!

Set Description:
Just revised. I rather like my i-iv system... in addition to Doug Walcutt's groups.
i: Stacked Signatures; plate letters In-In Bureau imprint upper right
ic: Stacked Signatures; plate letters In-Out Bureau imprint upper right
ii-iv: linear Signatures; Bureau imprint lower border
ii: Plate letters In-Out
iic: Bureau imprint upper right
iii: Plate letters Out-Out
iv: Plate Letters In-In (not found at this time)
v: a tough variation on i for Philly Fourth Street NB and maybe just one other. For Fourth Street, EFGH and IJKL plates with stacked signatures, In-In plate letters, but bureau imprint in lower border

Philadelphia, PA The Manayunk NB Ch. # 3604 PMG 12 Philadelphia, PA The Manayunk NB Ch. # 3604 PMG 12 $5 1882 BB Fr. 469 SN 22/E140471 pp A/5 dtd. Dec. 17, 1886. A Circus Poster note, CP-1 is found on plates for only 46 banks. This example might have been received by someone unfamiliar with the design or perhaps deposited at a bank with a suspicious teller, as someone has penned in ink the date of "Aug 22, 1949" on both sides. Beautiful penned signatures of Jno. J. Foulkrod, Cashier and David Wallace, President. This is one of only five $5 Brown Backs documented from this institution and the 1st of 4 titles. Manayunk is centrally located just 15 minutes from Center City Philadelphia, King of Prussia, Chestnut Hill, and The Main Line. Nestled along the banks of the Schuylkill River and the Manayunk Canal and Tow Path, the commercial district is lined with renovated Victorian storefronts and mill buildings giving you an urban experience with small town charm. The area's name is derived from the language of the Lenape Indians (later called the Delaware Indians by Europeans). In 1686-dated papers between William Penn and the Lenape, the Lenape referred to the Schuylkill River as "Manaiung", their word for "river", which literally translates as "place to drink"; the word was later altered and adopted as the town's name. 5014148-004 $5 1882 Brown Back National Bank NotesUnited StatesF 12

June 10th, 1885. (1st title). Note is from a BEP replacement plate, as denoted by its C* plate letter. Treasury Dept. correspondence states that the banks were charged $100 for new 4-subject plates and $25 for reentered plates. The FNB started receiving Star notes after a Jul. 27, 1888 reentry of its $5 plate. Utica's Oneida NB also received a starred plate Aug. 20, 1889 on their $5-$5-$5-$5 plate. The out-of-order M block occurred after Z and T from Sep 1898-Jun 1899. It has a new NY state seal introduced for $5s Dec. 11, 1896 starting with bp 80 (bp 92 this note). This Utica bank issued large notes only with two titles, the 2d being the FNB & TC. Signatures have mostly faded, but officers were John A. Goodale, Cashier and Publius V. Rogers, President. Doug Walcutt's Group 5--'Princess Leia' title layout. This group derives its name from the spectacular embellishments on the ends of the tombstone that resemble Princess Leia's Coiled hair in the Star Wars movies. The wording, WILL PAY TO THE BEARER ON DEMAND, is found only on this layout for the 1882 series $5s, making an appearance on the plates for four banks between December 1886 and Jan 1887. All have the BEP imprint in the upper right corner, in-out plate letters, and white charter numbers. A truly scarce Cincinnati bank which issued Brown Backs only before liquidating in 1904. Extremely bold and dark penned signatures of H.A. Smith (Smith's signature, if it is indeed his, consists of a whirl of penmanship that gratefully survives to date), Cashier and Jno. E. Searles, President (who served in this position from only 1896-1898 and possessed a beautifully legible signature). This bank issued Brown Backs only during its 16 year run. Liquidated 31 Jan. 1903. Kelly lists just 13 survivors. One of the three institutions chartered in New York City to adopt a geographical title such as "western." Beautiful, dark penned signatures in black ink of D. (David) E. Robeson, Cashier and And. (Andrew) Reed, President. A well-margined and very colorful $10 Brown Back from this Lewistown bank that is one of only two examples of this type and denomination in the census. It has a vertical charter number, indicating it was one of the earlier Brown Back notes to be issued. Dover, NJ The N Union B Ch. # (E)2076 Ab Border Dover, NJ The N Union B Ch. # (E)2076 Abnormal Border Variety PMG 35 $10 1882 BB Fr. 485 SN 8293/K670677K pp C/15 dtd. Dec. 20, 1892. A highly elusive Brown Back in any grade for this Morris County bank. This happens to be a much nicer example, showing outstanding margins on the front, albeit uneven margins on the back due to a slight mis-alignment while printing the face. Generally decent signatures may be seen aside from staining that partially obscures the cashier's neat penmanship. Signers were Chas. Applegate, Cashier and Vice President E. (Elbert) H. Baldwin. President in 1908 was C.R. Mulligan, succeeded by Thos. H. Hoagland while Baldwin served as Cashier before Applegate. Misplaced Charter number. The Cutout for the charter number was misplaced on the $10 roll that was used between 1885 and 1893 to make the upper left border. Used to make series of 1882 3x10-20 plates from Aug 1885-June 1893 based on cerification dates on proofs for new banks. It is possible that the roll was used a bit longer for extending banks or banks undergoing title changes. First used for the Ninth NB Phila. (3371); last Itasca, TX (4924). Normal, IL Ch. 4930, certified October 23, 1893 is first use of new 'normal' roll. 8084066-004 $10 1882 Brown Back National Bank NotesUnited StatesVF 35

The Citizens is a scarce bank--this is only the second $10 Value Back to be reported. Evenly circulated and problem free with nice color and margins. Ten Dollars and National Bank are reminiscent of Walcutt's Gp 16 plate note of Towanda, PA (also the Citizens NB). The A in Dollars has the diagonal crossbar and the E in Ten matches the E in Five. Letters for NB have spikes on top and bottom surfaces, but for Lewistown it is layed out in a curve, not flat, with larger letters, but the dangling balls off the T are gone. Signatures have faded away. 5004559-020 $10 1882 Value Back National Bank NotesUnited StatesVF 25
