In 1997 the Bangko Sentral Ng Pilipinas (BSP) started the practice of ''dating'' the banknotes, (top left just under the denomination), only the 10 Piso carry the 1997 date, all others begin with 1998. It is because of this dating that banknotes will now be listed by date and signature only, and no longer by serial number.

Fidel Ramos was president for only one year after the release of this series before Joseph Estrada won the presidency. Before Ramos departed, his administration oversaw the issue of the world's largest banknote. On May 22nd, 1998, a 100,000 Piso banknote was released to mark the centennial of independence from Spain. The note measures 215mm x 355mm (8½'' x 14'', the size of American legal paper). A total 1000 of these notes were printed in Germany and carry no less than twenty-one security features.

The Presidency of Joseph Estrada saw the first 2000 Piso printed. It celebrates his inauguration in 1998. The BSP also issued a 1000 Piso .999 gold banknote which was presented by President Estrada to visiting VIP's.
