2012 $15 Canada Year of the Dragon
A classic Asian interpretation of the mythical Dragon, complete with auspicious clouds of good fortune.
Year of the Dragon:1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012.
The Dragon is a supernatural, celestial power; cherished in Chinese culture for its wisdom and the prosperity it brings to earth. The Dragon is the ultimate “doer,” and tackles everything with fiery enthusiasm. It’s extremely loyal to its loved ones and will come to the rescue every time. Right or wrong, forget about steering a Dragon away from a disastrous situation—duty calls! The Dragon may have a big ego and demanding ways, but it inspires everyone it comes into contact with—this magical character is too dynamic and captivating to resist!
The intrigue behind the Chinese New Year:
In China, the New Year is also known as the Spring Festival. In this ancient society, farmers have always looked to the moon to determine when they should begin sowing their crops. That important date arrives with the first new moon after the inception of spring; roughly halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. As a result, the Chinese New Year shifts from year to year. In 2012, the Year of the Dragon begins on January 23rd—celebrate!

2024 $15 Canada Year of the Dragon
Description
Celebrate the Year of the Dragon and mark a special moment in 2024 with this 1 ounce $15 fine silver coin from the Royal Canadian Mint. The whimsical Dragon on this fine silver coin is quietly confident and clever—traits that are associated with those born in the year of the Wood Dragon (2024). The natural leader of the Chinese Zodiac, the Dragon symbolizes strength and fortune. It is known for its ability to make things happen when it focuses its energy, and in a year associated with the Wood element, there is the potential for groundbreaking ideas that bring progress and prosperity.
The Design:
Inspired by traditional Chinese folk art, the obverse design by Canadian artist Jai Paek celebrates the Year of the Wood Dragon (2024) through its whimsical depiction of a Dragon (“龍”). The courageous and clever Dragon bears a playful expression as it snakes across the coin, with its head facing West and its tail facing East. The lucky number seven, which is also associated with harmony and prosperity, is represented by the Dragon’s seven heart-shaped scales. The obverse also includes the word “CANADA”, the year “2024” and a face value of “15 DOLLARS”.
The reverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt with a repeating scallop pattern. The reverse also bears a special marking that includes four pearls symbolizing the four effigies that have graced Canadian coins and the double date of her reign.
Those born between February 10, 2024 and January 28, 2025 will fall into the Year of the Dragon, as will those born in 2012, 2000, 1988, 1976, 1964, 1952, 1940 and 1928.
