Coin Details

Origin/Country: United States SAN FRANCISCO, CA 1915
Item Description: BRONZE SC$1 1915 CA HK-404 FLORIDA AT PAN-PACIFIC PANAMA-PACIFIC EXPO HK-404
Full Grade: NGC MS 62
Owner: Bruce Thomas Collection

Owner Comments:

Purpose: To celebrate opening of Panama Canal; to commemorate 400th anniversary of discovery of Pacific Ocean; to celebrate rebuilding of San Francisco following 1906 earthquake and fire.

The obverse is a takeoff on the famous ancient (ca. 200 B.C.) Winged Victory of Samothrace, while the reverse is a modified state seal, with an anachronistic steamship sailing past a Native American in traditional garb, with the sun setting over the mountains in the background and a palm tree.

THIS FLORIDA STATE FUND SO-CALLED DOLLAR TYPE IS MUCH RARER IN BRONZE (HK-404) THAN IT'S COUNTERPART IN SILVER-PLATED BRONZE (HK-404A). THERE ARE (26) OF THE BRONZE HK-404'S VERSUS OVER (100) OF THE SILVER-PLATED BRONZE HK-404A'S LISTED IN THE NGC CENSUS AS OF 7/2023. AND SOME OF THE GRADED HK-404'S THAT I HAVE SEEN IN THE PAST ARE ACTUALLY THE SILVER PLATED HK-404A'S.

THE MOST RECENT SALE THAT I CAN FIND FOR THIS RARE MEDAL IS AN NGC GRADED AU 58 EXAMPLE THAT STACKS BOWERS SOLD IN 2009 FOR $287.50.
