ANA ELONGATED CENT CONDITION/APPEARANCE:
TOP POP - Choice Brilliant Gem — Designated “RED” by NGC
*I am not entirely privy to how elongated coins are graded. If the reverse shows part of the original coin, does it grade higher? If it shows the date; even higher? Or, is it simply graded like a regular uniface coin? These are questions I unfortunately do not have the answers to. That said, this example is stunning. A completely red penny with sharp legends/lettering. The original obverse of the Lincoln Memorial Cent unfortunately does not display the date on the reverse; as the original reverse is shown (vs obverse where the date could potentially be seen). Cent is definitely pre-1982/copper based on weight. — A beautiful overall specimen. — This particular example resides at the “top” of NGC’s population report, tied with no others.*

ANA ELONGATED CENT BACKGROUND:
Struck by the TEC (The Elongated Collectors) at the 2006 ANA’s World Fair of Money in Denver, Colorado to recognize TEC Historian Nancy Wooten, as well as the convention itself.
—————
I was initially hesitant to include “any” elongated coins in this collection. However, upon further thought, I strayed to think of the historical value they offer, the unique perspective, an overview on a group many may not be familiar with (TEC), and how it aligned perfectly with the 2 of the 4 primary goals for this set:
- To obtain any numismatic specimen minted in and/or having "any" association with the state of Colorado.
- To teach people about Colorado's rich history, as well as myself, through the tool of numismatic education.

RARITY: Likely quite rare; I have never seen another example offered.
(*TOP POP* NGC Pop = 1; NONE Finer - NGC Total Pop = 1) [04/2023]
**NOTE: Only example graded by NGC; strong indication of rarity.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
(TEC: The Elongated Collectors):
“The Elongated Collectors is the official collectors organization for elongated coin enthusiasts. Its purpose is to:
1. encourage the study, acquisition, and exhibition of elongates and related items.
2. research and publish articles in TEC News and elsewhere.
3. assist new collectors, especially youth.
4. promote the realistic and consistent valuation of elongates.
——-
The TEC gathers for their annual meeting at the American Numismatic Association’s World’s Fair of Money convention. In addition, many of their members gather throughout the year at mini-meets in various parts of the country to visit with one another, compare collections, trade duplicates, and go on squishin’ missions. Many of them also participate in various internet discussion groups, sharing their latest discoveries and helping each other out in any way that they can.” — Credited Source: TEC: tecnews.org
