Owner Comments:

Todor Stoyanov Burmov is a prominent Bulgarian revivalist, a fighter for church independence and an active political activist after the Liberation. During the Russo-Turkish War of Liberation (1877 – 1878) he was the treasurer of the Chancellery for Civil Affairs at the headquarters of the Russian Army. In 1878 he was appointed vice-governor of Plovdiv, and the following year - governor of Sofia. This predetermines his brilliant political career. Prince Battenberg chose him as the first Prime Minister of the country, and at the same time he was the Minister of the Interior and the head of the Ministry of Public Education. Until 1884, he was one of the leaders of the Conservative Party, twice elected as Minister of Finance. He was a member of the Supreme Court of Cassation (1881). Later he was again the Minister of Finance.
