I consider it an honor to be part of the NGC Registry and for my set to have been chosen to receive this award. My goal is to assemble a collection of So-Called Dollars and related medals that consists of attractive, quality examples no matter their grade. Many of the medals in my set are finest known or top pop examples, with the majority of the remaining medals that make up the set being within a point or two of top pop status. Although my ambition is to build a complete collection of the Soho Mint pieces, this would be an unrealistic goal. Instead, my goal is to accumulate a representative sample of Soho pieces that depict the height of artistic and scientific ingenuity of the era. In completing this goal, I hope to bring knowledge to those interested by providing detailed pictures and accurate descriptions. A great deal of numismatic history remains to be explored by those unfamiliar, and what better way to learn than by looking at a selection of handpicked specimens?

As of May of 2024, I have over two hundred pieces to add to this set. They will be slowly added as time permits once they have been graded.

This set won the NGC Registry "Most Informative Custom Set" award in 2020. I am deeply humbled by NGC’s generosity, and this award, paired with the kind words from the NGC judges, means a great deal to me.

Notes from the judges:

As the owner of this set explains, its title is taken from a line in the musical Hamilton that is uttered by Britain’s King George III to the newly independent America. In fact, the introductory text to this set makes for such fascinating reading that it’s easy to forget about the coins. These comprise a broad assortment of the copper pieces struck for George III at Matthew Boulton’s Soho Mint from 1788 to 1813. Each piece is nicely illustrated and accompanied by very detailed text about its technical details, as well as its historical context. This is a truly superb presentation.

It is my opinion that he was one of the most interesting personae in German history. As a very intelligent and educated man, he assumed his role as a King with full responsibility and, arguably, great passion. He had a great many passions; he loved change, and imposing it, he loved women, art, science, Greece, architecture etc. – but his dearest passion of all was coins, of course! He adored seeing new coins, especially those displaying his portrait and great achievements as the King. He oversaw the production of many commemorative coins: more than any other Germanic ruler. Thematic & Topical Coins brg5658 Horses My goal is to create a collection of coins, medals, tokens, and other numismatic items which feature prominent images of the horse. Items included vary greatly in the use of the horse image. While this is not an exhaustive collection of such items, it is a wide-ranging set of coins paying tribute to one of the worlds most graceful and beautiful creatures. I also have a large collection of raw horse related numismatic items (around 100 pieces not replicated here).

Most pieces feature the horse in one of three ways:

  • The horse as a symbol of heraldry, power, or mythology

  • The horse with a mounted (usually famous) rider

  • The horse in its natural surroundings as an animal intertwined with the history of humans

Judge's Comments: Thematic collecting is always popular, and this one makes the most of coins featuring horses. In addition to a great array of coins and tokens from around the world, from ancient times to modern, the individual entries are presented in an extremely attractive and entertaining manner. A template is used that presents the coins in “postcard” form, with an enlarged view of the side bearing the horse imagery. A second postcard includes other non-numismatic images which help to tell its story and place it in context. This is a truly fun set which will appeal even to the non-collector.
 

2015 NGC MOST INFORMATIVE CUSTOM SET
Judge's Comments: This charming collection features depictions of horses on coins, medals and tokens from all periods of history back to ancient times. Having already been awarded “Most Creative Custom Set” in 2011, it presently features over 250 pieces and will continue to grow. Each specimen is described in detail, with most entries providing information about both the numismatic item and its subject matter. This is done in the form of two postcard style views, one for the specimen and another for the subject. The project is ongoing, particularly with respect to the historic views, but it’s already a very broad and educational presentation that transcends numismatics alone.

World Coins TMS Coins 4. GREAT BRITAIN, GOLD HALF-SOVEREIGNS 1817-2017, COMPLETE CIRCULATION ISSUES.
My main collecting interest has been on the modern coinage of Cyprus 1879-1949.
During this period Cyprus was under British Administration and the "piastre coinage" made its appearance in 1879. The copper piastre became the unit of currency and was fixed at the rate of 180 to the British gold sovereign. The gold sovereign became the standard measure of value and remained the coin of unlimited legal tender throughout the period from 1878-1960. During the reign of Queen Victoria, the gold half-sovereign was also legal tender, demonetized though from the 1st May 1901. Due to this relation, after completion of the "Cyprus Piastre Coinage Collection", the collection of sovereigns and half-sovereigns became a strong challenge. So, fifteen years ago I started to build up this collection of gold half-sovereigns with the goal to obtain high grade examples for every year since their first issue in 1817, buying always the best that could be afforded. As the quality of the individual coins determines the strength and value of a collection, constant emphasis was given on quality and condition rarity. For some rarer and scarcer pieces though I had to compromise condition in order to fill the empty slot, hoping to upgrade as opportunity permits. However there are a few ultra rarities in these series: 1845 (R4), 1862 (R6), 1879 (R4); not a single example of these appeared in a decent condition for many years!
It is true that in general half-sovereigns, especially those of the 19th Century, have become a great deal more difficult to find in uncirculated condition, even more difficult than finding uncirculated gold sovereigns. Despite this, it is really a challenge to hunt, to recognize opportunities and be prepared to strike when a piece comes up in order to fill up the empty slots with high grade coins or upgrade certain dates. "There is no substitution for quality".
Although the collection is still a work in progress, contains examples from all the Reigns. All coins are NGC-certified and many of them are "Top Pop" or single finest graded, quite a few conditionally rare.
Actually 2017 is more exciting because is the 200th anniversary of the "modern" half-sovereign which was first struck in 1817. During this year I managed to fill up some empty slots with new entries and make a few upgrades, so the collection reached an 81% completion. I also added, as a "guest star", a 1937 PF 66 Ultra Cameo half-sovereign of King George VI. During his reign only proof half-sovereigns were struck by the Royal Mint as part of the four coin Coronation Proof Set, with a mintage of only 5001.
By February 2024 the Collection reached 92% completion.

World Coins Cozdred United Kingdom Gold Sovereigns -- Date Set Complete set 1817 to date. Total of 175 dates as of 2023. Have 112 = 64%.

I started collecting gold sovereigns in Jan 2022, so the set is just getting started. A few of the rarer years will not be obtainable on my limited budget, but I hope to acquire as many as possible.

In every case, my main objective is to obtain coins with great "eye appeal". Not looking for the highest grade, but rather the nicest looking example that I can find for each year. Since most MS60 to MS62 coins are heavily "bag-marked", I will generally seek out nicer looking AU coins for my collection.

A separate sub-goal is to collect all of the 1979 to 2022 coins in Proof condition. Since only a few thousand were struck each year, that is going to take a while! So this is a long-term project.

Token & Medals coinsandmedals The medals of Soho near Birmingham This set is a tribute to my friend, Bill McKivor, who recently passed away. Although we only knew each other for a relatively short time, Bill quickly became one of my favorite people. He is the sole reason I ended up collecting the medals of the Soho Mint, and as such, it seems fitting that his memory lives on in my collection. Bill had an eye for exceptional quality, and although he handled most of the Boulton Family collection, the medals held a special place in his heart. I, too, have developed a keen fondness for the Soho medals, and so far, I have been successful in locating many examples paired with silver-lined brass shells. Several of them once resided in either the Boulton family or the James Watt Jr. collections. This set aims to build a top-notch collection of Soho medals, emphasizing the ones Bill held in such high regard. The pieces that comprise this collection have been carefully selected. When appropriate, I have included the relevant provenance for each piece and the historical significance of the event or person depicted on the medal.

As of April of 2024, I have over three dozen additional medals to add to this set. Some are already graded, but the bulk of them are raw. Once I have more time and funds these pieces will be graded and slowly added to the set as I take the time to enjoy their relative history.
