Owner Comments:
In 1856 the city of St. Louis began holding what was essentially an annual county fair. In addition to the usual displays of livestock and fruits & vegetables the fair showcased the latest innovations in machinery and tools for both the farm and household. The fair was so successful that it soon became known throughout the country. It continued to grow larger each year and in 1884 a huge building covering six acres was completed to house the fair, which by that time had become known as the St. Louis Exposition. The building was named the St. Louis Exposition and Music Hall and included a large music hall with a seating capacity of 3,500 that became the home of the St. Louis Symphony. This medal was struck as a souvenir of the building’s opening. It is made of bronze and is beautifully toned in shades of copper red, brown, blue and purple. Its surfaces have a glossy sheen and are quite lustrous. The total NGC pop for this medal is 5, with this example being 1 of 2 that they have graded MS-64. Only 1 has been graded higher at MS-65. The overall rarity is R6 (21-75 known).
