Owner Comments:
After Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s death in 1870, the Robert E. Lee Monument Association was formed to raise the funds needed to have a monument built to honor him. It took six years for the association to raise the $36,400 needed. The association’s president, Louisiana Supreme Court Justice Charles E. Fenner then hired sculptor Alexander Doyle to sculpt the 16’6’’ tall brass statue which would stand on a 60’ tall column. The statue was dedicated on February 22, 1884 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Attendees at the dedication included General Lee’s two daughters Mary Custis Lee and Mildred Childe Lee, Former Confederate President Jefferson Davis, and Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard. This medal was struck for the unveiling of the statue. It is made of bronze and has beautiful glossy brown surfaces. It is one of only three examples that have been graded by NGC, all three of which have been graded MS-63 BN. The overall rarity is R6 (21-75 known).
