Owner Comments:
Allegheny County is located in the southwestern part of Pennsylvania. Its name comes from the native Lenape word for the Allegheny River which is believed to mean “fine river”. The county was formed from parts of Washington and Westmoreland counties and was officially created on September 24, 1788. This medal was struck in 1888 to celebrate the centennial of Allegheny County. It is made of bronze, is nicely struck, and has an interesting die crack running diagonally through the center of the obverse. Its color is a rich mahogany. It was not included in the HK reference book, most likely because it was unknown to the authors at the time. However, it is shown on John Raymond’s web site as Unlisted So-Called Dollar #166 and it is considered extremely rare in bronze. NGC has graded this medal MS-66, but unfortunately, there is no population data listed in their census for this medal so I have no idea how many they may have graded or if any have been graded higher.
