Owner Comments:
In 1614, Dutch colonists settled in an area along the west bank of the Hudson River and built Fort Nassau for the purpose of fur trading. The English took over the Dutch settlement in 1664 and renamed it Albany, after the Duke of Albany. Albany was officially chartered as a city in 1686 and became the capital of New York in 1797. Two different medals were issued in 1886 to help celebrate the bicentennial of Albany and are referred to as type I & type II medals in Hibler & Kappen’s So-Called Dollars: An Illustrated Catalog 2nd Edition. Both were struck in white metal and bronze. This is a white metal example of a type I medal. It is the only HK-601 that has been graded MS-64 (1/0) by NGC and is the top pop example. Although it was not noted on the label, its surfaces are also proof-like. The overall rarity is R5 (76-200 known).
