I visited Vicksburg National Military Park on October 22, 2022 and took this picture of the USS Cairo.

Commissioned in January 1862, the USS Cairo, one of seven ironclad battleships named after cities located on the Ohio and upper Mississippi Rivers, was sunk by mines on December 12, 1862 while patrolling the Yazoo River.

Entombed on the river bottom for over 100 years, the Cairo was salvaged and partially reconstructed for display at the Vicksburg National Military Park.
