Owner Comments:
This medal was struck to celebrate the centennial of Marietta, Ohio in 1888. It is made of white metal, is un-holed, well struck and has deep-proof-like surfaces. The obverse features busts of General Arthur St. Clair & Joseph B. Foraker. Arthur St. Clair was a Major General in the Continental Army who, after the war ended, served as the President of the Continental Congress. He was made the governor of the Northwest Territory in 1788 and then what would become Ohio in 1800. Joseph B. Foraker enlisted in the Union Army at the age of sixteen and attained the rank of Captain before going on to serve as the 37th governor of Ohio from 1886 to 1890. The reverse depicts Marietta’s old stockade which was built in 1791 to protect the early European settlers from attack during the Northwest Indian War. Although this medal was not included in the HK reference book, it is shown on John Raymond’s web site as Unlisted So-Called Dollar #166A. Un-holed examples of this medal are considered extremely rare (R7 or R8). This piece has been graded MS-64 DPL (1/0) by NGC and is the finest known example.
