Owner's Description

Green Lantern's foe Keith Kenyon reruns in Issue #48. Calling himself Goldface, Kenyon uses a spray that turns whatever it touches into gold. Issuing a challenge across the city by meaning radio messages through all the cities gold demanding that people turn over Green Lantern for their lives.

After a couple of inconclusive battles, Hal manages to best Goldface by making the air around him solid so that the gold that coated around him coated the solid air and not him. Breaking free of the gold, Hal quickly knocks out Goldface's goons and then defeats Goldface with his own gold controlling helmet and turns him over to the police.

Our 9.8 comes from the Pacific Coast Collection, which is generally considered to be the greatest Silver Age collection to ever surface. It was brought to market by Robert Roter after he discovered portions of it for sale on eBay in 1999. The books were marketed through PCE over the next several years and contained over 7,000 comics and magazines that included Marvel, DC, and Gold Key among others, covering a time span between 1961 and 1977. Many of the highest graded Marvel and DC issues from the early '60s hail from this collection with exceptional page quality. The books do not exhibit any distinguishing markings.

As to our copy of this issue. it is one of two highest graded. However, as of this writing, we also own the other 9.8 as well. The pictured book is the Pacific Coast copy, while the other has white pages. It is always difficult to decide which to sell in such situations. Notably, this book marks the start or our 9.8 run, as from #48-89, we have 40 9.8s out of 42 issues. Of the two we lack, in neither case is there a 9.8 in the census as of May 2020. Most were not overly pricey, but it took years to find them all.

We acquired this book in the 3/13/2012 CL Auction.
