Superman 187 Universal 9.6 This is the second of the Superman Giants and the hardest to find in 9.8, as there is currently just a single example. Pir WP 9.6 comes from the Pacific Coast Collection and is thus probably the second best copy in existence. Considered the greatest Silver Age collection to ever surface, the Pacific Coast collection was brought to market by Robert Roter after he discovered portions of it for sale on eBay in 1999. The books were marketed through PCE over the next several years and contained over 7,000 comics and magazines that included Marvel, DC, and Gold Key among others, covering a time span between 1961 and 1977. Many of the highest graded Marvel and DC issues from the early '60s hail from this collection with exceptional page quality. The books do not exhibit any distinguishing markings.

We acquired the book from the 3/5/2024 CL Auction.

Aquaman 49 Universal 9.8 In Issue #49, a masked saboteur has been blowing up sections of factories whose wastes have been polluting the sea and killing oceanic life. After Aquaman and Aqualad get a summons from their old friend Prof. Dan Davidson, an oceanographer, they have to battle a mass of chemically-maddened fish. Then they run into Aquaman's new friend Phil Darson, who tells them of the occurrences and the pollution menace. Davidson asks Aquaman and Aqualad to investigate the factory sites of Miles Leland, whose plants have been targeted by the mysterious saboteur. The culprit proves to be Phil Darson himself, who dies shortly after killing Leland in a fight. With his dying breath, Darson explains to Aquaman that he committed his crimes to save the seas from being polluted by Leland. Meanwhile, in Atlantis, Ocean Master appears to Mera and demands to speak to Aquaman.

Our 9.8 comes from the Pacific Coast Collection, which is generally considered to be the greatest Silver Age collection to ever surface. It was brought to market by Robert Roter after he discovered portions of it for sale on E-Bay in 1999. The books do not exhibit any distinguishing markings

The book is one of three highest graded copies. It actually replaced another pedigree 9.8, but we have so many books from the Pacific Coast pedigree in this set that we decided to make the switch. We acquired the book in the 7/24/2023 CL auction. The good news is that we actually made more money selling our other 9.8 than this one cost us. .

Batman 161 Universal 9.4 I only buy Batman covers that I like. I never really collected these books as a kid, as I thought the TV show with Adam West was just too cheesy, although reputedly many girls of that era did not LOL. But I have to admit, I have become more attracted to these books of late, as the artist’s use of colors on some covers is remarkable. To me, this issue has an extremely cool cover with the midnight blue and purple background. It features appearances by the Mad Hatter and Bat-Mite.

Our 9.4 comes from the Pacific Coast Collection and is tied with four other books atop the census. Considered the greatest Silver Age collection to ever surface, the Pacific Coast collection was brought to market by Robert Roter after he discovered portions of it for sale on eBay in 1999. Our book is tied with one other copy for highest graded as of June 2024. This was one of those books where we were the top bigger at just a few hundred dollars entering the live auction. Unfortunately, because I was attending a football game, I did not participate in the live auction, so I left a high bid substantially over what I thought would be required and ended up getting the book at very near that reserve and about 10 times where the book was entering the live auction. Because it’s a PC WP 9.8, which is the ultimate in SA books in my view, I was not too upset to get it at that lofty price, well at least I wasn’t catatonic LOL. But, I always wonder whether I would have gotten it cheaper if I could have waited until the live auction to bid? Surely some of you have had similar experiences and wondered if somebody is artificially bidding up auction books to get to your max price? Oh well….

Atom 28 Universal 9.8 Issue #28 features a Chronos appearance. In "Time-Standstill Thefts!", while Ray is working in his lab on a device that will revolutionize space travel, the device suddenly vanishes. Examining the situation he realizes that he's also lost five minutes worth of time, and that whoever stole the device only stole one of its components and will likely be back. Suspecting that it's his old foe Chronos, Ray decides to become Atom, and hide within the second component and wait for his old foe to come back. Sure enough, Ray's suspicion proves correct at it is Chronos who stole the device, and comes back for the second component.

When he does, he inadvertently takes Atom back with him to his hideout. There Atom springs his attack; however, Chronos has a device, a flying buzz-saw, to counter Atom’s attack. Atom easily dodges this contraction and is ready to make a connecting blow when Chronos activates a device that freezes everyone except Chronos in time. He then moves out of Atom's path and shuts off the device, causing Atom to fall flat on his face, knocking him out. Chronos then ties the Mighty Mite to the hour hand of a watch, hoping that when the minute hand passes over the hour, Atom will be crushed to death. Chronos then goes out to steal a shipment of rare clocks found in an archeological dig, using his time freezing device to stop time and then call his sundial ship to aid him.

Atom comes around just as the minute hand is threatening to crush him, and uses his weight controls in his gloves to increase his weight to that the hour hand bends downward, saving Atom from being crushed. Atom escapes the trap just in time to hop aboard the sundial craft. Atom then surprises Chronos, and manages to smash the crooks time freeze device. During the fight, Chronos attempts to crush Atom with a Greek sundial. However, Atom shrinks down to size to hide in the dials molecules. Deducing what the Atom has done, Chronos then attempts to drown Atom by tossing the sundial into the ocean below, however, Atom then springs forth from the sundial as Chronos ducks out of the way, leaving him open to Atom landing a knock-out punch.

Aquaman 41 Universal 9.8 Issue #41 features yet another tough black cover-I guess they were intended to give us a feel for the darkness of the deep ocean. "The Trail of the Ring" continues the story started in Issue #40. After Aquaman returns empty-handed, he asks Zancol, an undersea traveller, about the five-sided ring. Zancol replies that such rings can be found in the land of the Maarzons, three days' journey from Atlantis, except for one direction, through the perilous, unexplored Depths, which will cut his journey down to one day's duration. On his way, Aquaman first encounters strange yellow gnome-creatures who telepathically induce fish to batter him. Then he comes upon a strange city, where he kills a glowing monster who was about to devour a woman and is arrested for it. Aquaman learns that the monsters provide the city with heat and light, and are allowed to kill the occasional human in return. Before he can be imprisoned, Aquaman breaks free, jumps astride another monster, and rides it out of town, threatening to kill it if the populace doesn't allow him to leave. Once in the clear, Aquaman leaves the monster, jumps on his sea horse, and resumes his journey. Once again, to be continued…..

Wonder Woman 145 Universal 9.8 This book, like several other highest graded Wonder Woman issues, was purchased from PG Mint. They were part of a collection put together by another collector mostly off 2011 Heritage auctions. It’s my understanding that the seller ran into financial problems and sold many books that he did not actually own, which may be the subject of an eventual lawsuit. For our part, at least, our ownership is not in dispute as the books were bought off e-bay listings and I also know the former owner, who does not want the books back, just compensation from PG Mint-I won’t name actual names here.

Our WP 9.8, like many highest graded Wonder Womans, hails from the Pacific Coast Pedigree Collection. Considered the greatest Silver Age collection to ever surface, the Pacific Coast collection was brought to market by Robert Roter after he discovered portions of it for sale on eBay in 1999. While for years it was the single highest graded copy in existence, it is currently tied with one other book atop the census.

Atom 16 Universal 9.8 Issue #16 features the Fate of the Flattened-out Atom. In the story, between his constant crime fighting as the Atom and his duties as a scientist at Ivy University, Ray is worn out, and decides to take a vacation. Of course, not everything goes as planned, as the cottage Ray rents is next to a roadhouse, which plays loud music all night long, driving Ray to go and sleep in the wilderness as Atom.

There Atom is captured by Andrew Frost, a man who has found that he gets precognitive powers whenever the Atom uses his powers. Only being able to see only 7 minutes into the future, he hopes that by capturing the Atom he can boost his powers. Frost uses a specially prepared iron, which literally flattens Atom, so that he can store him in a special case that channels the power into Frost.

While Frost goes out to use his precognitive abilities for his own personal gain, Atom is unable to get free due to his fatigue. However, he eventually breaks free and in spite of the fact that he has been flattened, the Atom is able to defeat Frost, restore himself back to normal and turn Frost over to the authorities, whew!

Aquaman 40 Universal 9.8 In “Sorcerers of the Sea", Aquaman and his family are sleep-drugged and Mera is abducted, but not before Aquaman is knocked unconscious by a man wearing a five-sided ring on his hand. Aquagirl finds Aquaman, Aqualad, and Aquababy and revives them and Aquaman and Aqualad begin a quest to find and recover Mera. They come upon an underwater medieval-style city, which is ruled by a group of magicians called "the Sorcerers" and whose queen is a dead ringer for Mera. When Aquaman attempts to snatch the queen, he and Aqualad are taken captive, and Aqualad gets a sword wound in his arm. Aquaman breaks both of them out of jail and gets Aqualad back to Atlantis, where he is hospitalized. Then he returns to the medieval city, fights past a sorcerous guard, and breaks into the Queen's private chambers. But Aquaman quickly determines that the Queen is not Mera, only a look-alike with different-colored eyes, and leaves to begin the quest for Mera anew.
