Owner's Description

Captives of the Cosmic Ray. This book features a guest appearance by long-time ally Green Lantern and is the sole 9.8 and single highest graded copy of this issue. I probably overpaid for this one, but it is a beautiful book. We acquired the book from Josh Nathanson on 11/22/2017.

2021 Update: Still King!

2022 Update: Another one bites the dust, now 1/2. No, make that 1/3. Now this is a really sad story. I paid a King’s Ransom for this book when it was single highest graded, which it remained for several years Then in 2022, a second one appears on a CL Auction and it goes for less than half what I paid for my copy. I bought it with my averaging down strategy, but then before I have even taken delivery, yet a third 9.8 appears. I did not buy it, I thought it was cosmetically inferior to the first two, but nevertheless, I will never recover what I paid for this one. Who would have ever thought there would be three 9.8s of a 1962 book, geez.

July 2022 Update: I was just offered another 9,8 of this issue and checked the census and there are now four 9.8s when there was just one to start the year. In all my time collecting, I have never seen anything like what we have seen with this issue. For years there was a single 9.8 of a 1962 book and then three new 9.8s hit the census in a matter of a couple of months. Needless to say, paying a premium for a book that is single highest graded is about as risky as playing the options market, don’t do it if you are looking at comics as an investment. This book is now worth about 30% of what I paid for it in 2017.
