Owner's Description

Issue #29 is a mini-key, in that it features the origin and first appearance of the Ocean Master, played cinematically by Patrick Wilson. In the story, when the Ocean Master endangers all shipping via a booby-trapped whale that causes aquatic disasters, Aquaman and Aqualad are called upon to stop him. But Aquaman refuses to fight the Ocean Master, though he and Aqualad do destroy the whale. The Sea King explains that Ocean Master is really Orm Marius, his half-brother. Tom Curry, Aquaman's father, remarried after the death of Aquaman's Atlantean mother Atlanna and had another son, who naturally could not inherit Aquaman's water-breathing powers and was jealous of his older sibling; as a result of which he got into trouble with the law repeatedly. A blow to the head caused him amnesia, after which he eventually became the Ocean Master. Though the villain gets away, Aquaman knows that he will face him again in the future, and does not know what his course of action will be.

Our WP 9.8 copy of Issue #29 comes from the Pacific Coast Collection. The Pacific Coast Collection is generally considered to be the greatest Silver Age collection to ever surface. It was brought to market by Robert Roter after he discovered portions of it for sale on E-Bay in 1999. The books were marketed through PCE over the next several years and contained over 7,000 comics and magazines that included Marvel, DC, and Gold Key among others, covering a time span between 1961 and 1977. Many of the highest graded Marvel and DC issues from the early '60s hail from this collection with exceptional page quality. The books do not exhibit any distinguishing markings.

Our 9.8 is the 16th PC book in this set, and is tied with three other copies for highest graded. We acquired it in a May 2023 trade for a very nice 9.6 that we acquired from the 6/12/2019 ComicConnect auction. And yes, there was a little cash involved as well LOL.

2024 Update: There is now a fifth 9.8, which was auctioned off in the June 2024 Heritage Auction. It tied the #5 9.8 for the highest price for any of the Aquamans in the auction.
