Owner's Description

Issue #74 features the death of the Leader. Our WP 9.8 comes from the Pacific Coast Collection, which is generally considered to be the greatest Silver Age collection to ever surface. It was brought to market by Robert Roter after he discovered portions of it for sale on eBay in 1999. The books were marketed through PCE over the next several years and contained over 7,000 comics and magazines that included Marvel, DC, and Gold Key among others, covering a time span between 1961 and 1977. Many of the highest graded Marvel and DC issues from the early '60s hail from this collection with exceptional page quality. The books do not exhibit any distinguishing markings.

Our book is tied with one other copy for highest graded as of June 2024. This was one of those books where we were the top bigger at just a few hundred dollars entering the live auction. Unfortunately, because I was attending a football game, I did not participate in the live auction, so I left a high bid substantially over what I thought would be required and ended up getting the book at very near that reserve and about 10 times where the book was entering the live auction. Because it’s a PC WP 9.8, which is the ultimate in SA books in my view, I was not too upset to get it at that lofty price, well at least I wasn’t catatonic LOL. But, I always wonder whether I would have gotten it cheaper if I could have waited until the live auction to bid? Surely some of you have had similar experiences and wondered if somebody is artificially bidding up auction books to get to your max price? Oh well….
