Planet Comics is the leading title to come out of Fiction House Publishing. The stories are above average along with some nice interior art. The one thing that puts Planets above many other titles of the 40's and 50's is their fabulously striking covers. They show fun and alluring depictions of aliens, monsters, space heroes, asteroids, mysterious worlds, and (on most) a damsel in distress. My favorite story series within the title is Hunt Bowman and the Lost World. I have read a fair share of the installments of Hunt and his friend Lyssa and they have all been fun, well thought out and drawn story lines. It is my goal within this collection to pursue and collect these books in high grade. I am not necessarily interested in collecting the run and "filling in the holes". They truely are cool to look at and hold in your hands when they are in great condition so it is worth the wait to find them in superb condition. A few of the books I have in the registry might not be considered by some to be in high grade. One thing about Fiction House books is that the ink on the covers can be drastically different from one book to the next even with the same issue. If I see an issue with a bold cover, it very well could take a spot in my collection over a technically higher grade. I am often asked, "what is High Grade?" As far as Planet Comics are concerned, my opinion is that for issues 1-30 and 65-73 that 8.0 or higher is high grade. For issues 31-64, 9.0 or higher is high grade. The only exception to this is for issues 13,14,15, and 17. These are supremely difficult to find and even more rare to find for sale. Almost any well presenting copies of these would be cherished in this collection.
The above description I wrote in late 2007 and have since sold a group of 18 Planets in late 2010 and kept 4. Hey what can I say, life happens. My intentions are still intact to collect superb issues of Planet. The only addendum to what I wrote in 2007 is that I am intrigued by adding certain pedigrees to this group of books, so a book not meeting the technical grade threshold that is of a "new to me" pedigree then it might be added as well. Planet Comics #10 is the first Planet Cover drawn by Dan Zolnerowich. I just love all the detail on this cover and this one has a beautiful uninterupted black cover which makes all other colors stand out. The details on the inside are quite cool too. The cover is from a panel in the Flint Baker story. The Queen of Morog is the one to the far right of the cover. She is ruler of the Morogs which were described in the book as having 'Electric-Telo-Eyes' and that is what you see on the cover is the green men with electric shock bolts vibrantly protruding from their eyes. This story is good, and Flint actually calls the Queen a 'Gloomy Puss' at one point and near the end when he was chasing her down actually says, "I am going to spank a Queen." The Red Comet story is about a twentieth century man named Scaro who was taken out of hybernation in the twenty forth century only to find out he use to be a gangster. Does he revert to his old ways? You will have to read and see. Also a good Spurt Hammond story in this issue and in the Captain Nelson Cole story, He gets tangled up when Mars declares war on Jupiter. Lastly, Gale Allen rarely dissapoints, but this one I could do without. Her friend Captain Jack is being controlled by a mad man's hypnosis and he locks her up in a storage room and takes over the base on Venus. This story is mostly about how she escapes and she shakes Jack from the hypnosis in time to save the day. This book is extremely tough to find and especially in this condition with the Black cover which usually shows every defect, this one is just hard to imagine it being in nicer condition.

Every comic has stories inside, and to collectors every special comic has a story about its acquisition. This book is a special one. Ever since I first saw #13 in the Gerber Journal, I knew that this was one cool book. What I did not know is that this issue is one of the top 5 hardest Planet Comics to find (IMHO). I searched dealer inventories, eBay, major auctions, etc. for #13 for years without even a sniff. I always looked wherever I could. One afternoon I was finishing up a deal on a few book over the phone when I asked the question that I had asked at least 100 times before…”You wouldn’t happen to have a Planet 13 lying around would you?” I just about fell over when the response was, “Well, actually I do and it’s a really nice one too.” After a scan was sent to me I made a phone call back and the book was purchased and on its way to me that afternoon. I read this one and submitted it to CGC. One bonus aspect about this book is its super bright and colorful back cover. Many comics have back covers that are basically blah, but not this one. There are several splash pages from this book’s interior that I would like to post here for the second scan, but I can’t bring myself to ousting the back cover. Speaking of interior, the stories in this issue are very good. Red Comet, an early Planet Comics staple, goes to Uranus to find that Queen Lura has been trapped in a magical globe and held hostage by a tyrant named Zorix. He fights Ice men with ski shaped feet, hurls Zorix “Screaming toward oblivion” within a magical globe as described in the comic, and eventually frees Lura to once again reign peace in Naru city. The Crash Parker story sends Crash to the planet Mercury to deliver Princess Vona back to her people from a visit to Earth. Gravity proves to be different on Mercury, so Crash is vastly superior to those that want Vona to stay gone. By the end of the story, Vona’s enemies are subdued and she wants Crash to stay on Mercury, but Crash thinks his responsibilities to the Universe are more important than romance. Lastly, the Reef Ryan story is one of the coolest drawn in the book. He is on Neptune, and Sarku has taken over the settlement there. One of the coolest pages is when they are fighting on a boat and Reef gets knocked overboard. Once in the water, Sarku tries to finish him off by throwing a jagged harpoon at Reef. Reef quickly grabs deadly shark swimming by and slings it in front of the harpoon. Sarku thinks the blood in the water is Reef. Next, Reef cunningly swims under the boat and resurfaces to surprise and defeat Sarku. The rightful Queen Vara is placed back on the throne and she too is very thankful to Reef.
Classic Cover, Classic Back Cover, Super cool stories and art inside, Desperately difficult to find issue. Planet Comics #13 is a 10 out of 10 for me.

This one is the book that really got me into collecting Planet Comics. It was my first CGC book with a blue label. I have always thought pteradactyles were really cool creatures. My son who is 3 likes to point at all 4 of the prehistoric birds on the cover. The girl in the orange dress twisted with the green bird plus the yellow background make this Dan Zolnerowich cover truely great. I won this book in a Comiclink auction.

This great copy of a tough Planet, took just over 3 months of negotiating to purchase. Between scan requests and price bantering back and forth, this one took a while to find a spot in my collection, but I am glad I own it now. The cover is from the Space Rangers story. In this story Flint Baker and Reef Ryan wind up helping a group of scientists who were stranded on the lost planet of Aztula. Men on flying dragons have been picking off the scientists one by one, until Flint and Reef get to the bottom of the issue and save the scientists. Norge Benson story is good. His group is first welcomed on planet Diablo by a man named Rojo. When they mistakenly meet others who were tricked and enslaved by Rojo to work in his boiling lava pits, the story takes a fun turn. This one ends in a wild “winner gets the girl and all possessions” duel between Rojo and Norge. How do you think this one ends? The Star Pirate story, yes it includes Brody with one eye, has them crash on an unknown planet when they run out of fuel, but ends when they discover the arrows used by the natives are made of pure Kobalium (The fuel needed for their space ship). They get the natives to attack them with the arrows, collect a few, jump inside the ship and lock the door, and then put the arrow heard in the “gas tank” and fly off.
Auro story has him aid the Namo (a colony only inhabited by women). Their water supply is being threatened so they go try and find out why the water is not flowing into their region. Once the problem is found, Auro is quickly captured and the Queen of Namo comes in and saves the day in a Wonder Woman like fashion. Auro is grateful and so are the people of Namo to have their water back. Gale Allen story is cool and it also has a “novel” type write up entitled “Is there a lost race beneath the Polar Cap?”
Mars story is great. It has Ted Wilson who is newly named a regional police constable on a territitory of the moon of Saturn. Once arriving to the area, he can’t help but notice the massive Temple to the local god. He enters to learn of the people, and is immediately smitten with the Head Priestess. After He sees the feelings are mutual, Mars takes control of her. Because of his love for her, Ted looks the other way and does not report that the Temple makes human sacrifices to a vicious creature called a Bloth (splash page in second scan). The human sacrifices grow to many humans a day and Ted finally stands up to the priestess. As Mars controlling her, she orders Ted thrown into the pit with the Bloth !! Somehow Ted manages to escape. Just then he learns that the entire Temple (60K people) are moving quickly to overtake the Earth’s military base. Ted manages to get the Bloth out of the sacrificial pit and directs it to run after the Temple disciples thus thwarting the attack on the base. The Bloth picks up the Temple Priestess and is poised to tear her body apart when Mars leaves her, as he always does before his victims die. Just then a ray blast from the military base kills the Bloth. Ted runs to the Priestess, now of clear mind she apologizes to Ted and it seems they will now live happily ever after. Mars’ victims almost never live, so this one took that extra twist and was surprising.
In The Lost World, Hunt and Lyssa run into a group of warriors in the area where California used to be. They all have blonde hair. Doesn’t everyone from California have blonde hair? No stereotype in this story! Anyway, they end up battling together to defeat “A god no man has ever seen.” In this one, Hunt fakes his death, rides an ancient Indian style motorcycle, Lyssa is almost sacrificed, arrows embedded into bad guys, and human sacrifices shown. Too many more twists to describe here, but I recommend you read it. This is truly a packed issue of Planet Comics.

The cover of 41 is great featuring Mysta of the moon, her robot busting through a door, a Villain with snakes for hair and a basket full of snakes for good measure. One detail that I think is cool is that Mysta is not only strapped to the table by her hands and ankles, but her hair is pinned down to the table in several places. Very cool book with nice bright colors front and back. This cover is usually seen with yellow-orange tones and this one is closer to orange-red. This issue is a great read too. Lost Planet story line has Hunt and Lyssa destroying a huge Volta Power Plant, fighting a dinosaur, engaged in fighting with Volta men on futuristic motorcycles, and being saved by a new friend named Schultz. Sound action packed or what? Schultz says he is the last survivor of Lake Institute. What is the Lake Institute you ask? You will have to read and see what device from the Institute he "shows off" to the Volta men. Also, a well written and drawn Gale Allen story. She fights a lost civilization of Itecs and gets almost too close with a group of giant spiders the size of elephants!
Mysta of the moon story is cool too where her enemy for this story is a crazed man who has an army of hands. The second picture posted for this comic shows the hand army carrying off survivors of a rocket crash that the hands caused. This story is Freaky and Cool at the same time. Also a panel in this story shows a Space General blowing his own brains out with a ray gun. Lots and lots of great stories here, I could go on and on. Pick this one up for the awesome classic Cover first and the stories will not dissappoint. Lastly, the White Pages designation on this copy is pretty cool too.

Below I have a scan of the front, but I have chosen to show a scan of the final story page as a tribute to the final issue of Planet Comics. Ironically the last story is titled "Among The Missing". I wonder how many Planet readers went to the dime store or corner drug store the next month to find that Planet Comics was no longer published and "among the missing".
