1:15 ratio variant cover - being a black and white version of cover 1A by Amanda Conner. This is a bit of a rarity, and it is due to Amanda's exceptional line work - this cover translates to black and white amazingly well. All the detail of the art is still there, the tension of the scene she has crafted is evident, and the light foreground/dark background does an amazing job of putting the image right in your face. I really like Amanda Conner's Red Sonja covers - I think this might be the first one, but she does an entire run some years later and her Red Sonja is strong, looks like a woman who takes no shit and leaves no one behind. She hasn't really developed that image for her yet in this early cover - but you can see some inklings of what is to come. Obviously, Amanda's Sonja - as pictured here is way thicker than Jenny Frison's - yet far less than she will become under Amanda's hand in the years to come.
Overall? I didn't get this cover from my LCS when it came out, I got the Nicola Scott cover. One of the few issues where I didn't get the Jenny Frison cover. Nonetheless, this either didn't stand out to me - or more likely my LCS didn't order enough copies for this to even be an option for me. But - I think if I had the choice - I very well might have chosen this one.

I really enjoyed the slenderer Sonja that Frison drew. This nearly all white cover really caught my eye at the time and is one of two that I took to ECCC to have double signed. Some days I wish I'd taken more of them, as the set is gorgeous and other times I am happier to have more signatures by different artists as opposed to a bunch from the same artist. Still, if we ever have cons again.
Anyway, the white birches, the pale flesh, the white cloak, and Sonja's mostly covered hair make for a very cool snow scene. Her boots are sinking in the light snow accumulation, and she's definitely ready to turn and make her stand. Jenny's take on Sonja was lean, muscular, and not overendowed - and I like it a lot. She looks and feels much more like a fighter than some of the heavier, fleshier Sonja's of other artists.
Overall - hell, I picked this and issue six from the entire run to have signed, so yeah - I think this cover knocks it out of the park.
Side note - what is it with Jenny's signature? Like so many artists have beautiful, practiced signatures and hers is really brutal.

Limited to 50 total copies. This red sketch version of the cover to issue 3 is an oddity. What I really love about the base cover to issue three is the use of color, so this version takes that away, and the resultant image is poorer for the loss. All in all, still a solid cover and I'm pleased to have one of the red sketch covers from a collector's standpoint - but the full color cover image is better.

Use of color is the highlight of this awesome cover by Jenny. Nice circular implied motion ties it all together. And you know you've just been gutted by the best.
Now I'd better pick up my entrails.
Overall? Awesome.

There was something about Sonja's profile on this cover - and the action of really focusing on drawing her sword that I found fascinating. As a portraiturist myself, I adore a good portrait. And this certainly qualifies. Focus is squarely on the relationship between sword swinger and sword. A relationship that many people who use the same swords regularly have. You learn your sword's feel and weight and even its little oddities, and that relationship becomes special (it's only one way - your sword doesn't love you back). While I don't understand why there are cutouts in Sonja's gloves, as they serve no purpose and make no sense to me, the image as a whole speaks to me: chin high, lips closed, eyes focused, sword at the ready.
Overall - yeah, I think this is another of Jenny's successful covers and I totally selected this one specifically for signing.

Once again a solid cover by Frison. This time its all in the eyes, which clearly glare out directly at the viewer. Personally - I'd run. I do have some issue with the sword behind the neck pose - it really isn't comfortable the way that Jenny has it laid out, but I do appreciate the sense of movement created by the strong diagonal. I guess its a toss-up.
Overall - yes, once again, I bought this from my LCS when it released, specifically selecting the Jenny Frison cover over any others that were available.

This cover really hits my sweet spot for portrait style covers. I vaguely remember the contest, and I don't think I ever saw this cover before acquiring it just recently - but damn. I really like the blend of fantasy elements with Sonja's hair - the direct gaze is strong and demands attention. Really a good overall cover.

There shouldn't be any doubt I love a good Jenny Frisson cover - there's something about her style that really resonates with me as a viewer and as a fellow artist. This sketch cover, devoid of color, is really striking. And so many of the sketch covers just aren't that good. Sonya looks worn down, tired, yet - still strong. Maybe that's the set of her jaw, or the strong eye contact. Contrasted with the flowers, it makes for a great cover. Plus - this Sonja obviously does squats as part of her workout.
Overall? Love it.

I really do think all of Frison's covers for this run are striking. This one is no exception to that - look at Sonja's strong gaze into whatever lies ahead - her weapons at the ready and her stance firm; this is a woman who takes no shit. Which is the version of Sonja I like best. Frison's cover art and Gail Simone's writing really blended well together and made for a run which I always felt ended too soon.
Overall? I totally bought this issue when it came out - and like every issue exception #1 - I selected the Frison cover because it was the most awesome. 100% this cover image does what it is supposed to, and convinced me to buy this book.
