Issue #48 is a biggie, featuring the first appearance of the Silver Surfer and Galactus. Despite the fact that it is the most readily available issue in high grade, 9.8s still demand a hefty premium. This 9.8 Signature Series copy is one of 5 highest graded with 38 additional blue label copies. We acquired our book in the 9/6/2011 CL Auction.*

issue #49 marks the first full appearance of Galactus and the second appearance of Silver Surfer. Unlike issue #48, there is only one 9.8 in the census, which sold a few years back for around $50,000-not to me LOL. This 9.6 is the Pacific Coast copy and marks our 11th in this run between #22-49. The Pacific Coast Collection is generally considered to be the greatest Silver Age collection to ever surface. It was brought to market by Robert Roter after he discovered portions of it for sale on eBay in 1999. The books were marketed through PCE over the next several years and contained over 7,000 comics and magazines that included Marvel, DC, and Gold Key among others, covering a time span between 1961 and 1977. Many of the highest graded Marvel and DC issues from the early '60s hail from this collection with exceptional page quality. The books do not exhibit any distinguishing markings.
The book also part of the Doug Schmell Collection auctioned off by Heritage in July 2012. We acquired the book in a trade of books with another collector in 2018.
2024 Update: There are now two 9.8s in the census, maybe one day……

Another cover featuring Galactus, Silver Surfer and Johnny Storm heading to college. This issue also features the first appearance of Wyatt Wingfoot. Our 9.6 features white pages and comes from the Twin City Collection. The Twin Cities Collection was the product of Gary Dahlberg who spent his life carefully buying, reading and storing comic books away throughout the '60s and '70s, with aspirations to become a cartoonist one day. Sadly, he died in a fire in 2010, but to the astonishment of his family his collection was appraised at more than $1 million by Heritage, who auctioned the books in 2011. Consisting of mainly Marvel and DC, this accumulation has no identifying marks but yielded some of the highest grades of the early Marvel period with considerably high page quality. The collection ultimately brought over $2.4 million at auction.
The book is tied for second highest graded trailing three 9.8s, none of which was have ever seen, in the census. We acquired our book in a book swap with another collector in 2018.

Issue #55 features the Thing versus the Silver Surfer. Our 9.8 comes from the Pacific Coast Collection, which is generally considered to be the greatest Silver Age collection to ever surface.
Our book is one of four 9.8s, but it is topped by a single 9.9, which may be the only one in this set. We acquired the book in a trade in 2018 with another CGC member.*

Issue #56 features appearances by both Klaw and the Inhumans. It’s a fairly rare issue in 9.8, with this one being one of only three and obviously the highest graded. We acquired the book in the 3/15/2019 ComicConnect Auction.

The FF once again battle the Sand Man in issue #61. 9.8s of this one are relatively rare because of the black cover, with just three topping the census. We acquired our WP 9.8 in January 2020 in an acquisition of 14 FFs from another collector.

Silver Surfer, Galactus and Psycho-Man are all featured in Issue #76. Our highest graded 9.8 comes from the Rocky Mountain Collection. The Rocky Mountain pedigree was assigned to a large Marvel and DC Silver Age collection originally auctioned by Comiclink in 2008. The Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and X-men runs were first auctioned without pedigree, but due to high collector interest the decision was made by CGC to classify the collection as a pedigree. Subsequently those three runs were retroactively given the Rocky Mountain notation. Hailing from Colorado, the collection numbered around 5,000 books, initially stored in a basement in similar conditions to the Mile High collection. None of the books exhibit identifying marks, but are easily traceable back to Comiclink.
Our 9.8 is tied with 10 others atop the census as of May 2020, so this one is not rare. We acquired it in the November 19, 2015 Heritage auction.
2024 Update: Talk about not rare, there are now 14 9.8s, glad ours is at least a pedigree.
