Set Description:

Synopsis: I am still laughing about the fact that nobody has built one of these sets, as obvioulsy several collectors out there have all these books. In 2022 we started buying Supes from the 1960s when so many high-grade examples came on the market. Our books start around Jan 1960-at least that’s the intent-before this set begins, and will end about December 1969. Since DC did not publish this book on a monthly basis in the 60s, there are less than 100 issues in our intended set. As of this writing, our set here is a little over two-thirds complete with five single highest graded examples.

Background: I am not a big Superman fan, in fact, I rarely bought these books as a kid. To me, Superman was too powerful and therefore could never have a worthy adversary. I much preferred the Marvel characters and some of the more vulnerable DC characters. I also don’t feel they are some of the more interesting covers.

With that said, I have started buying some highest graded 60s book just to have a little Superman in our collection since he is an original member of the JLA and an important character in comic book history. I do like a few of the covers, but there are too many weak silly stories for my liking. With that being said, while by no means a priority, we may continue to expand this one as the opportunity arises and finances permit. I like this time range and the books are not too inflated, relatively speaking. But for us, this title remains somewhat of a sideshow.

2023 Update: We have started adding some lower graded (9.4) books in this range when the opportunity arises and the price is right, just to fill some slots. This set still has a very long ways to go, but we have now filled over two-thirds of the slots.

I have two criteria for buying a SA Superman, at least one that isn’t an 80-page Giant. First, it has to be a highest graded example. And second, I have to like the cover. This 9.6 satisfied both criteria, as the idea of Superman in a gunfight with four super criminals is definitely different. Our book is one of just two 9.6s with no 9.8s. We acquired the book from the 7/18/2022 Heritage Auction.

We picked up this book from Steve Zuvich in June 2023. According to the census data from CGC, it is the single highest graded issue, but I do not believe that’s right, as someone else lists having a 9.6. So it may be the census is wrong and this book is second highest graded. In either case, it’s a rare book, as only 27 copies have ever been certified, and features a cover where Superman is locked into a cell with Kryptonite gas.

Issue #170 features a cool Lex Luthor cover and a story featuring Superman meeting President John F. Kennedy. This book was also the cover issue for the 10/26/2023 Greenwich Collection Auction on Heritage. That being said, we got into a bidding war on this one, which we unfortunately won, so we paid far more than any other issue in this set. At least it is the single highest graded example in the census, at least of this writing. We acquired the book from the 10/26/2023 Heritage Auction.

Issue #171 features the first appearance of Rokk and Sorban along with a Mr. Mxyzptlk appearance. This 9.4 was one of our first acquisitions of a book in this title that does not top the census, but it does come from the Twin Cities Collection and filled an open slot. The book is tied for second highest graded trailing a pair of 9.6s. We acquired the book in the 10/23/2023 Heritage Auction. We may look to acquire some more 9.4s just to fill in some slots, as Superman still remains somewhat of a sideshow for us.
