Story summary: After traveling all night, Rick arrives in Georgia. He finds a petrol station and is frustrated that it's out of gas, just like the previous ones. He continues driving until he runs out. Continuing his journey on foot, he goes to inspect a nearby farm. After knocking on the door and receiving no answer, he enters the house. To his horror, he discovers the entire family are dead - having committed suicide. After rushing outside and vomiting, he goes to inspect the barn. There he finds a horse and a hatchet inside and continues traveling to Atlanta on horseback. On the way to Atlanta, he started rambling to the horse about when Carl was born to make him feel better, but it doesn't.
Rick finally makes it to Atlanta and initially finds it deserted. Some zombies spot him and start to follow him, with their numbers growing slowly but surely. It isn't long before Rick runs into a street full of zombies. He tries to turn around, but the way he came is blocked by zombies as well. He gets thrown from his horse and, as most of the zombies attack and devour the horse, others turn their attention to Rick. He uses the hatchet he found at the barn to protect himself, but is soon surrounded and begins to use his gun. He runs into an alley when suddenly, a young man named Glenn grabs Rick and tells him to follow him and to stop shooting. Glenn grabs the ladder to the fire escape and hurries Rick to follow him. Rick says he's never seen so many zombies, but Glenn assures him that's nothing and that, if he had gone fifty feet more into the city, he wouldn't have survived. They climb to a rooftop and Glenn proceeds to jump to the roof of the other building. Rick is hesitant, but jumps when he realises he has no choice. From that point they make it down the building and make a run for the woods, which are about a block away. Glenn says that the zombies are slow and that they should easily maneuver around them. He also warns that one bite from a walker will kill you.
The two finally make it to the edge of town near a wooded area. Glenn is surprised Rick is so inexperienced, but Rick explains that he was in a coma. Rick asks Glenn what happened to the people in Atlanta, and Glenn informs him the zombies were those people. Glenn explains that the government tried to herd everyone into the cities, but people started dying and turning into walkers. In the space of a week everyone in Atlanta had died. Rick falls to the ground as he fears that his wife and son are now dead. Glenn consoles Rick and tells him that he is with a small camp of people and brings him along. Glenn tells him the camp is mostly made up of latecomers who tried to get into Atlanta, but couldn't, so they set up camp in the woods. Rick asks if that's safe, but Glenn assures him they have cars for shelter and take turns keeping watch. He adds that they're camping close to the city as they figured it'd be easier for the government to find them when they stopped the outbreak. Just as Rick gets to the camp, he sees his wife, Lori Grimes, and his son, Carl. All three embrace, happy to be reunited.

Rick's first day at the Atlanta camp. First appearance of Allen and Donna and their twin boys Billy and Ben, Jim, Dale, Carol and her daughter Sophia, and sisters Amy and Andrea. CGC census 10/2020: 1298. 310 @9.8, none higher. There are just 52 copies graded at 9.8SS. Story summary: Shane comes to greet Rick. Rick is happy to see him and Lori says that Shane helped her and Carl escape to Atlanta. Shane shows Rick around the camp and introduces everyone. The young man that helped Rick in the city is Glenn. There is Allen and Donna and their twin boys, Ben and Billy, Dale (who owns the RV), Jim, Carol and her daughter Sophia, and sisters Amy and Andrea. Everyone leaves Rick and Lori to be reacquainted. That night, Rick and Lori talk. Lori apologizes for leaving Rick at the hospital. He forgives her saying that he was happy that she was doing what was best for Carl. Rick asks if Dale is enough to keep watch. Lori begins explaining the situation of how very few zombies have come near them. Rick, finally thinking about the situation they are all in, admits that he is scared. The next morning, Rick wakes up and meets Shane as he comes out of his tent. Shane mentions that Dale's camper has a working shower and he wants to go hunting with Rick after he takes one. Rick takes his shower and upon exiting, meets Dale. Dale tells Rick that he shouldn't trust Shane. He says Shane is a good man and helps out around the camp, but Shane isn't happy that Rick is back because he has had his eye on Lori. Rick appreciates Dale's concern, but reassures him that Shane was only keeping Lori and Carl safe. Rick laughs it off as he leaves the camper and heads off with Shane to hunt. Meanwhile, Lori, Carol, and Donna go down to a stream to wash clothes. The others stay at camp to watch the kids. As Rick and Shane are hunting, Shane mentions to Rick that he is glad that he brought some guns. So far they only had Shane's side arm and Dale's rifle. It's been hard to hunt and they have only been eating what Glenn can get from his trips into the city. They hear a rustle and come across a zombie eating a deer. They note that it is oblivious to them standing there. They question whether it would be safe to eat the deer. Back at the stream, Lori tells the story of how she met Rick to Carol and Donna. They finish the washing and head back to the camp. Just before they get to the camp, Allen, who is keeping watch on top of the camper, sees a walker right behind the women and yells for them to look out. Allen tries to shoot the walker, but Donna is in the way. Suddenly, Dale, who was out cutting firewood, comes up from behind and decapitates the zombie. They are relieved until they notice that the head of the walker is still sputtering and moaning. They are shocked to see it still alive. Back at Rick and Shane's position, the two are debating taking the deer when the walker finally notices them. It starts to stand up but Rick impales it in the head with his axe. They suddenly hear a gunshot and run back to the camp. They get back to see that Allen has shot the head of the walker that attacked. Allen tells Dale that they should get the body into the woods and away from the camp. Rick immediately runs up to Lori and consoles her as Shane looks at the couple with jealousy. Lori reveals that she is pregnant.
First Charlie Adlard art.
Issue #7 was the first TWD issue to sell over 10,000 copies (still low in comparison to a guaranteed seller such as Batman which was selling an average of 65,000 a month). The rear cover features the Eisner Award nomination for 'Best New Series'.
CGC census 12/2018: 835.
CGC census 6/2019: 861. 506 @9.8, 6 higher (five @9.9 and one @10 Gem Mint).
Story summary: A flashback is shown with Lori, waiting outside the city where her parents lived. She is confronted by Shane, and she confides in him how horrible she feels leaving Rick in the city. After a short conversation, Lori and Shane kiss, and she says that she "needs him." The two of them end up having sex.
Back to the present, the survivors are burying Shane. As the rest of the group leaves, Lori stays behind and spits on Shane's grave. Allen and Rick talk about Shane, with Rick worried about what the apocalypse is doing to their mental state, lamenting how much it changed Shane. Rick goes to ask Dale about Andrea. The two proceed to talk about Shane, with Dale not being surprised that their former leader snapped, as he's been changing ever since Rick arrived to the camp, adding that Shane was in love with Lori (which Rick is aware of). Dale proceedes to inform Rick that everyone at the camp thinks Rick is best suited for leadership. Rick accepts and tells Dale they will be moving the camp tomorrow. Dale mentions that, according to Andrea's calendar, it's Christmas. Rick angrily tells him to keep it a secret, as he doesn't want to have to explain to Carl why "Santa can't find him".
In the morning, as everyone is packing, Rick wakes Carl up and tells him that if he ever wants to talk about what happened, he can talk to him. The group then departs their camp using the RV. They continue on their journey until they need to clear some cars that are blocking the road. When they finish, they spot some figures approaching from the darkness. Rick pulls out his gun. but the figures turn out to be three survivors. One of them introduces himself as Tyreese, and introduces the other two as his daughter Julie and her boyfriend Chris. Tyreese asks if Rick has any food, as they ran out a couple of days ago. After feeding the family, Rick offers them room to sleep in the RV with the group and tag along in the morning if they want. Tyreese thanks him, but says they will be sleeping in the car for tonight, as Julie and Chris aren't too comfortable around strangers. Lori criticizes Rick for inviting a stranger to sleep in the same room as them. Rick stresses that Tyreese has kids with him, but Lori points out that they do as well, and tells Rick not to be so trusting.
The next morning, Tyreese apologizes to Rick about not trusting him enough to sleep in the RV. Rick understands, as the apocalypse changes people. He recounts how Shane, who was his best friend, tried to kill him a few days ago, Tyreese, in turn, tells Rick about the time they went to scavenge in a grocery store. A man, who was really nice and sweet before the apocalypse, attempted to rape Julie. However, he was able to kill the man before he could rape her. Rick doesn't judge Tyreese, and says anyone would have done that. Tyreese says he's beating himself up because he doesn't feel any guilt from it and the apocalypse has changed him. Suddenly, the two discover roamers. Tyreese marvels about the name 'roamer', and Rick explains they are zombies who just roam around, and killed Amy and Jim.
Tyreese and Rick take their primary weapons; hammer and hatchet. They trick the zombies, Rick takes one of them and Tyreese takes the other one. They beat them to death and say the situation is under control. They return to the RV and Rick tells Dale to drive around so they could look for some empty houses to stay in. Suddenly, they discover a crashed car in the road. Rick thinks they have to start moving it aside if they want to get to safety before dark.
Rick reveals he's glad they bumped into Tyreese and his family. They came in handy, especially because Tyreese is strong. Carol and Tyreese are having some eye contact.
At night, Tyreese says the people have a lot of food. Rick says he has to thank Glenn about it. He says he was just doing his part, but, Carol thinks they'd be much worse off without him. Tyreese agrees, he and Carol hold hands, and Glenn seems awful. Rick thinks it's honorable that Glenn risks his life for others and supplies.
While Rick is talking about finding Lori and Carl, Lori walks away. Rick catches her and asks what is wrong. Lori reveals that she is pregnant.
