For me, the real hook isn't Dazzler's debut — it's Jean as the Black Queen, and the first cracks in Cyclops's trust. During the fight, he calls her 'Phoenix' rather than 'Jean,' a small but telling shift after the Wyngarde kiss earlier in the issue. That's where this book really gets its teeth.

So many amazing moments in this book. Jean takes down the White Queen without breaking a sweat — and while #134 is credited as Dark Phoenix's first appearance, I'd argue she's already showing herself here. Kitty — a kid! — jumps in to free Wolverine, Colossus, and Storm, with Logan stepping up to cover her in classic fashion.

"Wolverine: Alone!" is incredible — these poses defined his fighting style from here on out, and it of course introduced his healing factor, taking point-blank rifle shots and shrugging them off. But the most important beat is often missed: the psychic rapport Jean establishes with Scott during their quiet moment last issue is what ultimately gives Dark Phoenix's undoing its emotional foundation.

Largely a battle issue, but the emotional core is Jean's reckoning with Wyngarde. The way she pays him back for violating her — breaking his mind completely — is what breaks her. Enter Dark Phoenix.

Dark Phoenix toys with the X-Men, beating them handily, while the wider Marvel Universe reckons with her embrace of unlimited power — she destroys a solar system, killing billions. The stage is set. Often missed: this issue also plants the seed for Days of Future Past, as Shaw begins courting Senator Kelly.

That splash page!
The Shi'ar Empire gets involved — Phoenix must be destroyed! Curiously, the entity visits Jean's childhood home, giving the X-Men and Professor Xavier their shot at saving her. The teamwork foreshadowed in that earlier Danger Room session pays off, and they pull her back — but no sooner does the fight end than the Shi'ar beam everyone up for the ending in #137.
Unfortunately, this registry set doesn't include #137, as it wasn't published as a UK Price Variant. But as we all know, Jean makes the ultimate sacrifice to save the universe.
