Synopsis:
Ten-year-old Jupiter Niklos Assante, heir to the throne of the Grendel-Khan, is stolen from the retreat in which his rapacious stepmother has hidden him away from the rightful reins of power. The child is worth a hefty ransom, but there seems to be more than money on the mind of his kidnapper -- who is none other than Grendel!
Laurel Kennedy, who controls Earth as Regent, arrives at the compound where her stepson Jupiter Niklos Assante recently resided. An unknown figure in a Grendel mask broke into the compound with knowledge of all of their security codes, killed all of the guards, and abducted young Jupiter Assante. Laurel and her assistant Heath assemble a squadron of six elite Red Devils to go after the kidnapper. When they find him in the desert he tears through their ranks with arm-mounted guns and an energy sword. The pair continue to ride off.
Laurel and her men track them as they head east. At one stop the Grendel is forced to combat with a local gang, killing the members. Grendel and Jupiter continue towards New York city.

Matt Wagner - Inker
Bernie Mireault & Kathryn Delaney - Colorists
Kurt Hathaway - Letterers
Diana Schutz - Executive Editor
Synopsis:
Grendel and his charge, the young Jupiter Assante, continue to make their way across the barren and dangerous wasteland that is America. En route, they're beset by zombies, gang warriors, and killing machines -- and if they survive these, can even the devil himself make it through New York City alive? Meanwhile, Laurel Kennedy has problems of her own as she unearths an insidious plot known only as Project Athena, fostered by her now-dead husband, the former Grendel-Khan.
Grendel and his young traveling companion travel through Mississippi on the way to their destination and encounter a redneck biker gang. Grendel is forced to deal with them before proceeding. They pause at a toll stop before New York City where a gang called the guardians of pain prohibit entrance into the city. They require Grendel to show them his pain before entrance would be permitted. Grendel hurls himself off of the bridge, bouncing like a rag-doll off of the rocky cliffs before plunging into the river below. They find the display of pain acceptable and permit the two to go forward into the city.
Meanwhile Laurel Kennedy continues to track their progress, having already dispatched nine more squadrons of troops to aid in the Grendel's capture. Her daughter Crystal is locked down for the duration with her young guard Susan.
While traveling through the toxic pit of New York City, Grendel encounters mutant zombies as well as extermination robots before being able to exit. He believes their journey through New York will throw anyone off of their trail.

Synopsis:
The chase is still on for young Jupiter Assante, heir to the throne of the Grendel-Khan, and his abductor, the mysterious masked figure -- who, we now learn, may even have been sent by the Khan himself! This issue finds the pair stealing through the Louisiana swamps, only to land on the doorstep of an old witch! It would seem the ancient crone is more foe than friend, however, when news of Jupiter's death travels back to his stepmother, Laurel Kennedy.
New intel from the journals of her late husband Grendel Kahn informs Laurel Kennedy that the abductor they are tracking may actually be a paladin trained and dispatched by the Kahn himself for the sole purpose of protecting his only son Jupiter at all costs. The Grendel and her son are now known to have survived the pit, spotted traveling through the Louisiana bayous by a scouting party.
Deep within the bayous Grendel and Jupiter encounter an old witch. The witch casts a spell and advises them in their journey. After leaving a group of Red Devil's persue them through the swamps but believe the pair to be dead after an explosion rocks the bayou. However, it was just an illusion cast by the witch. Grendel and Jupiter find land, head to a port, board a ship, and travel out to sea.
Back at the Dakota complex young Crystal is told by her mother that the situation with Jupiter has yet to be resolved, so she will have to wait patiently before being allowed out.

Matt Wagner - Inker
Bernie Mireault & Kathryn Delaney - Colorists
Kurt Hathaway - Letterers
Diana Schutz - Executive Editor
Synopsis:
While Laurel Kennedy announces the death of Orion's heir to a shocked world, setting off a political explosion in the process, Jupiter Assante and his captor, the mysterious Grendel figure, have in fact set sail for Africa. The problem is, they've hitched a ride aboard a freighter about to be attacked by a band of vicious pirates, out for plunder and blood. It's swashbuckling action like you've never seen before, as young Jupiter finds himself quite literally caught between the "Devil and the Deep Blue Sea"!
In a televised appearance, grieving stepmother Laurel Kennedy announced to the world that Jupiter Assante and his abductor were killed in a freak accident in the swamps of Louisiana. The resulting complications begin to get on her nerves and she starts to lose her self-control.
Meanwhile, the freighter that Grendel and Jupiter are aboard is being pursued by pirates. Grendel knew that the pirates would eventually capture the ship for its supplies. The ship's crew was old and would not stand a chance in a fight. Grendel prepared a ruse to gain the element of surprise by killing four members of the ship's crew and spreading their blood around the ship's deck. Then he and the rest of the crew waited on deck, pretending to be dead. When the pirates boarded, they investigated what looked like a mass suicide to avoid capture. Grendel caught them off-guard and they were able to kill the pirates. Grendel then slaughtered the rest of the crew and blew up the ship to cover their tracks. The pair boarded his hover-speeder again and made their way alone across the ocean to Africa.

Prime and the rebels move on to Siberia to track down the vampires that took Jupiter Assante. On the way across a mountain, an avalanche buries the vehicles and people. Prime is able to dig them out but expends much energy to do so. They continue on to an abandoned silo where Jupiter was taken.
Stateside, Laurel Kennedy's mental health is beginning to deteriorate due to the stress. News that her daughter has escaped the Dakota compound with her personal bodyguard does not help matters. Heath continues to secretly consolidate power in his own hands. Susan and Crystal continue their journey, stopping briefly for supplies.
