This is the start of it all for Star Trek in the comic books. I contend that as far as the Gold Key comics are presented that Spock is the lead character in the series. As proof I offer that all you have to do is look at the cover of the first of issue.
It's hard to think of W. Shatner, as shown on the back cover, as a pin-up model these days.

Just came in from ComicLink. This is the first time that I'd seen one of these up for sale and there was no way I wasn't going to be the winner. I bid more than double what I ended up getting it for, and would have gladly paid that amount. There are only 8 graded copies and this being one of the mid grade ones it was most likely the highest grade I could afford. I'm just wondering what the M28 on the cover stood for.

I always knew that men from other plants were green, just like the moon is made of cheese. I find it interesting that Spock seems to get the covers on the comics but on the TV show the main being was Capt. Kirk. I guess thats comics for you, aliens sell better than humans. This issue is one of the best for its art work, many panels of cities and odd looking trucks. This issue is somewhat know for the fact that it shows Kirk and Spock watching a reel to reel tape to catch up with history of a planet. Hey, where's Spocks pointed ear?

Well, here it is. Started out as a PGX-6.0 ow and came back as a CGC-7.5 c/ow. What's up with that, PGX is the one that over grades comics by a point or two. I most likely over paid for this book when it was in the PGX holder and then paid to cross it over into the CGC holder. Now that it's a 7.5 I most likely got it at a steal. Check out my comments about this issue in the previous slot.

Here we go with one of those crazy mistakes that the artists did in this series. Ummm... Spock using a notepad to calculate something, I don't think so. Okay, major mistake, but 2 pages later thay make up for it with the best panel so far in the series. Sure, it's only a head shot but just look at Spock, there's emotion and concern in that face. I love it even if the ears have a bit to long of a point. Great art work.

Looks like Capt. Kirk gets the leading role on this cover. The story seems a little weak but I do like this panel page. I got this one off from eBay for around $90 from a seller named, Strawberrycatsup, I've always liked that name.

Looks like he's ready to take a pass in some cosmic B-ball game. Okay, really, come on, it's time for Spock to give up the notepad and pencil. I mean here it's 2009 and pencil sales have been going down 9% per year for the last 4 years. Pencils will only be in museums in Stardate 23:00.9

Hooray, we get to see Bones on a cover. The story in this issue is kind of "out there" and I guess you could just say silly. It's a good read and the art is cool in that many landmarks of earth are shown.

I like this cover due to the fact that we get a look at most of the top members of the crew.
The only member that's missing is Scotty and that may be due to the fact that this is the only issue where he has blond hair.

This cover always freaks me out and I don't know why. In this issue we get to see why there will always be blond jokes. In fact, it looks to me in the future blonds may even be dumbing down more. Okay, I was wrong about Scottys blond hair, he has it in this issue to. The story is just avg. in this issue but there are many great panels of art. Wish I could get more than 2 pictures for this issue.

This is the first painted cover I've shown. Painted covers started with issue #10 and we never see another photo cover till issue #45, and that's just for that one issue, then it goes back to painted covers till the end of the series. I was happy to get this CGC-9.4 for $100 as the back cover makes it hard to find a high grade. I love the see-through space suits the two guys are wearing. Arrrr... Scotty has his black hair back. Once again the world is right.

Great cover but the comic always look dirty or faded or yellowing to me. Can the world really put up with two Capt. Kirks. That would mean two Shatners. It would mean double the Priceline.com ads.

This could be a cover for some TV cop show. Bullets all over the place at close range and no one gets hits. This panel shows some old guy that looks like someone from a movie I saw and his name is on the tip of my tounge but I just can't come up with the movie or actor.

Okay, Spocks looking kind of pissed off on this cover and when you get to the splash page you see why.
A couple of pages into the story Kirk and Spock need to get into a city. The real Kirk and Spock would have at least asked about getting in , but no, in the comic they just beat the crap out of the guards to get in. Upgraded to a 9.0 from a 8.5 on 1-7-10. Upgraded from the 9.0 to this 9.2 on 5-8-20. Only took 10 years to upgrade .2 points.

Well, pretty nice cover that made me want to read the story. The story wasn't that great but there are a lot of nice panels that look great.
There is the scene towards the end where things get a little heated.
This is the last issue I needed to complete the series. Thanks Tom S. Update- Upgraded from a 8.5 to this nice 9.0 on 12/25/09. Update- upgrade from the 9.0 to this nice 9.2 on 8/28/20 which is from Comic Connect Auctions.
