This was purchased at my first LCS, Comicards. There were two proprietors, one has been dead for a few years now, the other faded into obscurity. Dane, who I wrote about long ago in my 75th journal was the only one that ever recommended books to be as a teen. Something I didn't take advantage of, as I should have.
He introduced me to Daredevil, the Miller years, which had me looking on the wall at a beautiful copy of issue 168. I eventually purchased that book, but wouldn't have done so if I wasn't so enamored by this one. I think the price at the time was $12. That was 16x the cover price...sixteen.
The book streeted in September of 1985, I was thirteen, and my 7-11 either never got this in, or it was just a hot book, like Amazing Spider-Man #252.The combination of Art Adams and Whilce Portacio are a team that fit better than peanut butter and jelly. And with Ann Nocenti creating the path, a rollercoaster was formed.

Buying back issues as a kid is akin to buying a luxury item. More times than not they were above the cover price, and if they were a key issue or considered the flavor of the day, then a premium price was added. ALl the Longshot books were purchased off the wall, the first one being the most expensive. I don't remember what I spent on issues 2 and 3, unlike the other four. I can imagine I probably spent about $6, once again above the cover price of .75 cents.
The series was different then the X-Men and the New Mutants. Longshot seemed to be just misunderstood. The first issue was unlike anything I ever read before and the second issue was just as zany. We are introduced to Ricochet Rita, a hollywood stuntwoman,. We learn more about Longshot in a flashback as he is flying with a jetpack.
Pup becomes something more, and incidentally I love how with each issue, under the Marvel logo, pup begins to grow. On issue two he seems to be a very loyal dog, well until you read the inside.

This is my original copy. I graded the book a 9.4, possibly a 9.2 due to some staple stress. The book was not pressed.

I have to get better at signature placement. For some reason I feel rushed. I know I waited in line like everyone else, but I am so very conscientious when I'm the one in the front and there are many behind. I haven't been doing this as long as others, or as many. I do this for me, but what if I was better. Would hold have been better, all silver, better placement. I need to hear Yoda in my head the next time and my the patience will settle in.

This is it, the best of the best, the only 9.8 I have from my original six. The signatures are in stark contrast to the rest of the book, the black sharpie looks great against the white background. I wish the other five were as gorgeously rendered as this, the funny thing is, out of all the cover fors this series, this was the one I liked the least.
The first Marvel super hero Longshot comes across is non other than the She-Hulk, and for no reason other than he stole diamonds she hits him into a tree. I would figure that would be the acts of a few other heroes, but a Lawyer. Her aggressive nature never took her over like her cousin's took his. And then while Longshot tries to figure out his predicament, we are thrust back to see Mojo.
Mojo is maniacal, crazy, insane, and those are the nicest things I can think of. But then when you realize what a crazy nut he is, we are sent back to look in on our friend Longshot and just in time too, because here he is dodging insults from our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.

Out of all five books, this is the only book that graded lower than what I thought it would be, maybe I will have it pressed to see if it will attain a higher graded. But first, I used black on this cover when I maybe should have used gold. I did bring paint markers but an earlier experience had me trying to blow on them to dry, which meant more time at the booth and the thoughts that i had to rush were growing.
Pup is finally fully grown...or maybe he had more to grow, but as he grew he became angrier and angrier with Longshot. He even grew as part of the cover under the Marvel logo, and this would be the last he would sit there. Pup is absorbing the magic of this world and that attracts Doctor Strange. Between the two, Pup...blows up. This leaves room for the next ACt, the dance between Mojo and Spiral...who did make a great X-men villain, not to mention Betsy Braddock would still be Betsy Braddock and not Psylocke courtesy of Chris Claremont and Alan Davis in New Mutants Annual #2

Here it is, the sweet sorrow ending. The last of my Original copies, and the last of my comments, which makes me wonder what should I write about next week when I get my other Longshot issues in, the ones I cracked for signing. I paid $8 for this book, so very long ago. And it might very well be my favorite cover out of the six. The black signatures merge with the shadows once again showing I need to be patient.
Doctor Strange continues to help Longshot as he find Rita's broken body. Since we already know a little about Mojo, we also find out..he's a coward. Defeated, they leave this world, and Longshot follows with Rita in tow. Surfer 99 read this and by the time he was finished probably thought something along the lines of...meh.
This is my Original Copy. I graded this book a 9.4. This book has not been pressed.
