Suriname - 1943 P (Palm Privy) 1 Cent Brass - (KM #10) - Mintage: 4,000,000
This coins was minted by the Philadelphia Mint during World War II using brass recovered from spent artillery shell casings. It is listed in the mint records as having been struck specifically for circulation in the Dutch colony of Suriname, but since it is virtually identical to the 1942 issue in design, it probably circulated in Curaçao as well.
Unfortunately, brass coins are not afforded a Red, or Red-Brown designation like bronze or copper coinage. If there was an equivalent designation for brass coins though, this one would be the equivalent of Red!
This is a beautiful, well preserved specimen. . If you follow the link to the price guide for this coin, you will see that NGC used this coin as the plate coin on that web page.
In recent years, it appears that Bronze specimens have been discovered and have been given the number KM-10a by Krause and Mishler. I have yet to discover one myself though.
