Owner Comments:

Springfield, Massachusetts was founded along the bank of the Connecticut River in 1636 by William Pynchon. Initially the town was mainly agricultural, but due to its location it became a hub of trade routes throughout New England and New York. During the American Revolution, George Washington recognized the strategic importance of Springfield’s location and established the famed Springfield armory there in 1777. The Smith & Wesson Revolver Company was also founded there in 1856 and in a large part due to the skilled machinists and precision machinery needed by both the armory and Smith & Wesson, Springfield went on to became an innovative & industrial leader in the 19th & 20 centuries. This medal was struck in 1886 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Springfield’s founding. It is made of white metal and is an outstanding top pop example at MS-65 proof like (3/0). The overall rarity is R6 (21-75 known).
