Owner Comments:
In 1614, Dutch colonists settled in an area along the west bank of the Hudson River and built Fort Nassau for the purpose of fur trading. The English took over the Dutch settlement in 1664 and renamed it Albany, after the Duke of Albany. Albany was officially chartered as a city in 1686 and became the capital of New York in 1797. Two different medals were issued in 1886 to help celebrate the bicentennial of Albany and are referred to as type I & type II medals in Hibler & Kappen’s So-Called Dollars: An Illustrated Catalog 2nd Edition. Both were struck in white metal and bronze. This is a bronze example of a type II medal. It exhibits an appealing reddish-brown patina and is 1 of only 2 that NCG has graded MS-65. Only 1 has been grader higher at MS-66. The overall rarity is R6 (21-75 known).
